I was wondering if anyone had or if it would even be possible to utilize the usb port on some routers as an auxiliary wan connection via a usb modem?

Note that you will need to configure the USB modem first so that Internet connectivity through the modem itself works as expected.

That is a very common use of OpenWrt.  Any router with a USB port can run the modem drivers.
