Since the huge change for madwifi and rate_minstrel is used, I get following kernel message all the time:
final ndx too low
Can someone explain this, and tell me how to avoid it?

I got the same. With new madwifi I cannot change the tx rate of my AP by ex 'iwconfig ath0 rate 11M' - the router restarts (the rate is fixed at 36M and cannot be changed).
probably the new samplerate algorithm - minstrel is buggy or porting to openwrt isn't completly finished.
