in the list of modes also features 'apsta'. The name suggests an access point and a client role the same time; is there any documentation of what exactly 'apsta' means and how to use it ?

OpenWrt's /etc/config/wireless supports this mode. Create a client mode interface and and ap mode interface, run 'wifi' and theoretically it should work...
