Topic: advice: which router shall I buy

The content of this topic has been archived on 21 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hello,
I discovered openwrt yesterday and I'm very excited to use it. As far as my actual router doesn't supported it, I'd like to buy a new modem/router/AP but I dont know which one. I'd like to ask you for an advice. Which would you buy, for a reasonable price,  if you had to ?

Thanks for your help,
Tex.

Hi,

the best answer (which you will also find in similar threads) to your question is:
"It depends"...
... on what you want to do with the device, what are your requirements, do you need an USB-Port, what kind of Wifi (802.11a/b/g/n), ...

Regards,
Patrick
PS: If you want an overview of supported(and unsupported) devices, check http://toh.openwrt.org

Yes that's right, I should have say what are my needs. I think I need just the "basic" features witch are
- 802.11g naturally with WPA
- at least 1 Ethernet port
- no need for USB port
- "easy" flashable firmaware i.e. not via serial cable.

So, this is going to be a simple AP-setup? You could buy a "La Fonera". It's cheap(if you PM me, I could "invite" you to Fon (www.fon.com) and you can buy a "La Fonera" + the "La Fontenna" 7dbi antenna for about 13 Dollar/Euro incl. shipping.)
Another option would be the "classic" WRT54GL, which is additionally equipped with 5 (4xLAN + 1xWAN) ethernet ports.

I am partial but WRT54GL.

Those suckers are solid.  I have flashed and re-flashed it many times and it works like a champ.

I could not be happier.

Hi EvilDevil,

I would love to get invited and get the fonera for the specified cost plus the antenna.

Is shipping to US also free?

Thanks,

If only BroadCom were more open with driver source.

Hence difficulty getting Kamikaze on 2.6 kernel.  WHy *should* we have to have a separate group doing reverse-engineering to make an open-source b43 driver?  The whole thing is ridiculous.  Is there something super-secret in the ancient 802.11b/g source code on these old models?

Even before that with WhiteRussian, bugs/problems in the binary driver caused some difficulties with lockups.

Hello,
I was actually thinking about a Foenra since it has an Atheros chipset and seems to be well supported by kamikaze. But is a Fonera also a modem or just a wirless AP ?

I know that this is secondary, but I particulary like the design of Netgears AP's but most of them as marked as Work in Progress in the HW table. Has anybody tested the WGT624 for example ?

Hi,

Yes, the Fonera is just a wireless AP.  The Netgear WGT624 doesn't contain a modem either. If you want a built-in modem, you'll propably have to stick with the TI AR7 devices.

Patrick

Hi all,
Let's say I'm interested in an AP, with USB, and possibly some eth ports.
I see the Asus WL-500g Premium can suite my needs... but it is a bit expensive.

Can you suggest any openwrt supported, cheaper alternative?

Thank you!

Netgear WGT634U

Ooops... I was gifted one. Unfortunately, I'm continuously getting "Data Bus Error"s, which make that router unusable. I cannot understand if they are hardware or software errors.
This is why I was thinking about buying a new router.

Do you have any (positive) experience with WGT634U?

Tanks again!

I like the WGT634U so much I bought two.

But the little beast does run hot.  And big USB device needs to be powered externally (ie hub).

The first firmware flash is a little more difficult than most routers... the way I did it was to take it apart and connect up a 3.3v serial cable, then tftp via CFE.  In theory you could exploit the standard firmware, copy over mtd and flash without opening it, but I've never seen that documented.

Asus embrace opensource (Olegs firmware not OpenWrt).. shame the broadcom driver forces a 2.4 kernel.  If you can live without wireless then 2.6 works fine.  Specifically the WLHDD, it's a beauty.

Linksys are overpriced IMHO.

EvilDevil,
it looks like there are not many compatible devices with AP and xDSL modem so I think I will use my old AP as a modem and buy a new AP just for kamikaze. In this case, I think I'd choose Fonera. Is your invitation for Fon still valid ?

Thanks,
regards, Tex.

Hello,
I think I will buy the Asus WL-500g premium.
