Topic: need router advice please

The content of this topic has been archived on 29 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I'd like content filtering to block category web sites like porn, hacking, gambling etc. Keywords would be nice as well. Like dansguardian? I'd also like av for web security and ftp, email etc. like clamav i think? I'd also like to know how much bandwidth has been used for like day, week, month and year/total. Wireless would be necessary and Xbox 360 Live compatible and PS3 network compatible. Also upnp would be nice as well. I also would like the router to either have a hard drive built in or usb capable because I want to run torrentfluxb4rt or similar in the router.

Is any of this possible with openwrt and what would be a good router for this?
thank you.

I recommend the ASUS WL-500g Premium.  It's got 8MB of flash, 32MB of RAM, and 2 USB 2.0 ports.

With swap file/partition on the USB drive, it's possible to run DansGuardian with the ClamAV plugin (these packages are available here).

Hope this helps,
Charlie

but what about torrentflux b4rt and usage stats for the connection on download and upload amount for the network to the net etc?
i also do not know linux what so ever.

vnStat (package here) will give you traffic stats.  Getting  torrentflux b4rt running will likely take some hacking, but it's been done before-

i also do not know linux what so ever.

Now is a good time to learn.  smile

Yesterday I bought a Alix 2C2 (500MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, USB 2.0, MiniPCI). Well. it seems to be a good X86 device.

vnstat, lol, what a joke!
openwrt already does the traffic info i believe, but can't remember.
i would love to have openwrt on my pc, but don't know linux and how openwrt aint even made for pc. too bad, sad

the asus router mentioned to me seems a bit low end. sad like a ton low end.

OpenWrt is a Linux distribution for embedded devices.  If you want Linux on your PC, pick one of the hundreds of distributions meant for PC hardware (e.g. Ubuntu).

the asus router mentioned to me seems a bit low end. sad like a ton low end.

See the TableOfHardware.

ciscostu, no help at all dude.
Also I don't know why in the world you mentioned anything in the last post. I never said I want to run openwrt on my pc as an os, so you should not have assumed that. I know it's router type software which is exactly why I said I wish I could run it on my pc, but it's not made for the pc.

The hardware list helps me not either. It's useless really for people wanting to know good info etc on certain stuff.

If it's too low end for you, you need to get a PC instead of a router, for example one of intels GLY mini itx boards, then you'll have like 1Ghz 1GB RAM and can put Debian or something on it. The Asus WL-500-GP (not -V2) is high end for OpenWRT standards, most devices have only half flash / ram of the ASUS. It's okay for routing, QoS, firewall, simple downloads, etc, but the kind of filtering you want to do may indeed require something with more horsepower.

@buggs1a

Dude, you're an idiot.

Charlie
