Topic: Asus WL-500gP V2 - attempts to run Kamikaze

The content of this topic has been archived between 3 Apr 2018 and 23 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hi All,

Today I started to fight with my WL-500gP V2 router. When I discovered, that this is V2, my first thought was to bring it back, to get the older version, however, when I studied the specs, I've decided to try to get it running with Kamikaze.
After disassembling, I have discovered, that it has nice pins for soldering of serial connector (3,3V, so you need a level converter, however I use the USB-RS cable for old Siemens mobile) (the pin layout is as follows: 1: +3.3V, 2: RX, 3: TX, 4: GND - however double check it in your hardware!!!).
I'll publish the pictures of the disassembled device, as soon as I find good method for placing of relatively big images on this forum.

I succesfully flashed the device with the Kamikaze, using the diagnostic mode, however the router didn't start, or at least I was not able to communicate with it.
My serial console has displayed (I've changed the MAC number and DEVICE PIN for privacy reasons):

So it seems, that the start address was not correct, or the flashed system (openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx) didn't support the serial console available in the Asus WL-500gP V2...
However I,ve not bricked the device. It has successfully entered the diagnostic mode:

Hi All,

Here are the promissed photos of the WL-500gP V2.
whole board (4-pin connector in the left lower corner of the board is the UART connector, 10-pin connector next to the right may be a JTAG one, however I have not verified it.):

Someone offered a v2 as a donation. If I get it, I look into fixing up support (as well as trying to port u-boot over wink

Before I'll try to customize OpenWRT to run on the WL-500gP V2, I've decided to try to compile the original sources provided by Asus.
I have downloaded the GPLed sources of the firmware and tools.
However after installation of sources and tools the compilation is not succesfull.
First the makefile tried to build the httpd, which depends on netconf lib (which is not built yet).
I've changed the order of objects in the router/Makefile to delay the compilation of the httpd, but then the compilation fails on udefined BTNSETUP_XXXXX constants in the watchdog.c file.

It seems that there is an error in the watchdog.c file:
#define LED_POWER       GPIO0
#define BTN_RESET       GPIO2
#define BTN_SETUP       GPIO3

#ifdef BTN_SETUP

#define SETUP_TIMEOUT           60              /* seconds */
#define SETUP_TIMEOUT_COUNT     SETUP_TIMEOUT * 10 /* 60 times a second */
#endif //BTN_SETUP

BTN_SETUP should be defined before including the rc.h file, as this file uses it do define other constants
used later in the watchdog.c:
quote from rc.h:
#ifdef BTN_SETUP
enum BTNSETUP_STATE
{
        BTNSETUP_NONE=0,
        BTNSETUP_DETECT,
        BTNSETUP_START,
        BTNSETUP_DATAEXCHANGE,
        BTNSETUP_DATAEXCHANGE_FINISH,
        BTNSETUP_DATAEXCHANGE_EXTEND,
        BTNSETUP_FINISH
};
#endif

Are the published GPLed sources really the complete, error-free sources used to build the firmware?
Has anybody succeeded to compile them?

If you don't get a V2 soon, let me know, and I'll send you one.

Can someone tell me who in the US is shipping the V2?   I recently (3 weeks ago) ordered from Newegg and received a version 1.

I have project going that will require me to keep using the WL-500gP and need to keep OpenWRT going on them.

On the pictures, I can read that the memory chip is a Hynix HY50U561622ETP.
Does anyone know if this is a 32MB or a 64MB chip ?
I ask the question because the pictures of the wl500gpv2 internals that are available on the FCC web site are showing a samsung 64MB memory chip. Is the version displayed on the FCC site an early design, while the final version has only 32MB ?

wzab wrote:

Here is the datasheet http://hynix.com/datasheet/pdf/dram/HY5 … ev1.1).pdf
So it is really a 32MB (16M*16bit) chip.

You're right it's a D, not a 0. Thanks.
Too bad, 64MB would have been much appreciated.

To start intensive experiments with my WL-500gP V2, I'd like something to boot the experimental OpenWRT system from the USB flash disk.
Is there something which could boot from the standard CFE loader, provide the basic USB storage support and then boot the system from the USB disk?
In this way I could minimize the risk of bricking of my router, wearing of its flash, and provide optimal possibilities of manipulating of the experimental system (as it could be just unplugged from the router and plugged into the Linux PC to make changes).

Update:
I have found the following document: http://melbourne.wireless.org.au/files/wrt54/cfe.pdf, which says:
[...]
2.11 USB support
CFE includes a simple USB host stack with support for:
• An OHCI host controller
• Emulated root hub
• Standard USB hubs
• Keyboards and mice (boot protocol only)
• USB mass storage (SCSI command set)
• Some specific models of USB Ethernet controllers
Support is minimal, and this feature is generally unsupported
[...]
Does it mean, that it is possible to get the CFE itself to boot the system from the USB disk?
Update:
I have verified, that I'm able to interrupt the loading process via sending CTRL+C from the serial console.
Then I get the CFE command prompt:

However I don't know how to check if the router sees the USB disk, and how can I load/boot the operating system image located on the USB disk?
Update:
I have tried to download the firmware via tftp from the CFE prompt, however even it doesn't work.
This is what I have got (the firmware file was renamed to "test3.trx" to make it easier to type the filename:

CFE> load -tftp 192.168.1.2:test3.trx
Loader:raw Filesys:tftp Dev:eth0 File:192.168.1.2:test3.trx Options:(null)
Loading: TFTP Client.

And that's all. The wireshark says, that the downloading hangs after first two records of data...

I have investigated the sources provided by the Asus, and I'have found that the main change for the BCM5354 CPU is associated with the WATCHDOG_CLOCK frequency.
in sbchipc.h
#define WATCHDOG_CLOCK_5354     32000           /* Hz */
in sbextif.h
#define WATCHDOG_CLOCK  48000000                /* Hz */
and then in the time.c:

        /* Set the watchdog timer to reset after the specified number of ms */
        if (watchdog > 0) {
                if (sb_chip(sbh) == BCM5354_CHIP_ID)
                        sb_watchdog(sbh, WATCHDOG_CLOCK_5354 / 1000 * watchdog);
                else
                        sb_watchdog(sbh, WATCHDOG_CLOCK / 1000 * watchdog);
        }

So it seems, that the first reason for not booting of the OpenWRT on WL500gPV2 may be just incorrect WATCHDOG_CLOCK frequency, which leads to the timer interrupts occuring with 48000000/32000=15000 lower frequency then needed!
As a first "quick&dirty" trick, I've modified the WATCHDOG_CLOCK in OpenWRT sources to the value 32000. I'll let you know if it helped, as soon as the new image compiles.
Update:
Unfortunately, this simple patch didn't work. However it seems,that there is something wrong with the structure of the trx file.

b43-phy0: Broadcom 5354 WLAN found

So generally the kernel boots, but hangs after detection of the WLAN card...
However the version based on the kernel 2.4 works fine, as described in the previous post.

wzab,
Do have, or can you tell me where to get, the development version flash file that you loaded, using kernel 2.4?

Thanks

I have followed the following procedure, described on the OpenWRT wiki http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Bui … ikazeHowTo:

svn co https://svn.openwrt.org/openwrt/trunk/
cd trunk
./scripts/feeds update
make defconfig
make package/symlinks
make menuconfig # Select your target, packages and other options. Only select the packages you need.
make world

One suggestion: I have used "make V=99" instead of "make".
Otherwise sometimes the process hangs quietly when needs some input from the user. This happened to me when I have accepted the certificate only temporarily http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=14965, and than (with the kernel 2.6 version) during the kernel compilation (the make wanted to ask me about one new configuration option (PPS if I remeber correctly).
IMPORTANT WARNING!
You need to have the serial console connected! I have not checked if the router is accessible from net after the reflashing, before some hand made adjustments are done (via the serial console)!
To install the serial console you have to disassemble the device (= loss of warranty)
Update
My router, after flashing accepts the telnet connection on 192.168.1.1 (or ssh after setting of the password) on the LAN ports.
However I'm not sure if it will work the same way in case in your router. I think that flashing without the serial console is always very risky.

wzab: Can you share your version of develepment version of Kamikaze which is working on Asus WL-500gP V2?

In fact what I'm finally runing on my WL-500gP V2 is just a standard development branch of Kamikaze (r10627).
So finally my only merit is, that I was courageous (or crazy) enough to start experimenting with my box wink.
The information how to obtain the last development version is in my previous post.
Below is the configuration of Kamikaze (you can read it when doing "make menuconfig"):

Good Luck!
What I'm really trying to achieve now is to get the 2.6 kernel running on my box, as it contains drivers for many devices I have to connect to the router (it is supposed to be a node in a distributed measurement network, based on a public olsr mesh network www.outernet.pl).

I think what barteku and I are asking for is the precompiled flash file (.bin or .trx) that you have that works, as long as that's not against forum rules, and you're willing to share it.  If I had the resources available to compile it myself, I'd give it a go.  Unfortunately, I'm a linux newbie, and don't have the disk space for a linux install on my computer, along with the build environment.

Certainly I can share it!
The archive is temporarily available at http://www.ise.pw.edu.pl/~wzab/wl500/As … V2.tar.bz2
However please remember that flashing may be risky, and sometimes you may to brick your router.
I do not warrant, that this firmware will work for you with your nvram settings!
It has worked for me, and that's all I can say.

Thank you for sharing your work!  I understand that if I brick my router, it's my fault.  That goes with loading ANY firmware on it, except maybe the manufacturer's releases.

Will post how things work out here.  Thanks again!

Alos note that you didn't add any additional support, so failsafe mode won't work - and maybe other modifications are needed as well.

What works (at least on my hardware) is the possibility to tftp other firmware, after powering the router up with the RESTORE button kept down for a few seconds...
I know it is not equivalent of the failsafe mode, but it is a good last resort rescue solution.
Well, I'm not OpenWRT developer, and my solution is not supposed to be perfect. I just needed to have the open firmware in my WL-500gP V2.

wzab: thanks for your investigation to run Kamikaze on Asus Wl-500gPV2.

Does any body tried 'wzab version' of Kamikaze on Asus WL-500gP V2?? Is it working without console connection? What is default ip address, root password and how is possible to connect after flash?

Thanks.

I have checked this version of OpenWRT and it is working on my Asus WL-500gP V2.

Hello,
I have bought by mistake v2 version too.
Thank you  for providing this image that works!
I have following problems:

- which repositories should I use? I have configured a local ipkg repository in my computer (http server and your packages). But I would like a more stable solution.

- does usb work? I have a flash key and a bluetooth key. I added kernel modules and relative packages. When I try to "ls" content of /dev/scsi..../lun0 (which contains part0 file) shell hangs.  So I tried bluetooth: I tried to install bluetooth package but the package does not complete installation (it hangs the shell).

- I have tried to install webif but I have this bug: http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=61166
can you provide me a correct haserl file?

Thanks in advance for help!
Mario

I'm afraid there are no stable repositories for the development ("trunk") versions. I also have only the local repository.
Probably we have to wait until the support for WL-500gP V2 will be included into the new official release.

When I power up my router with the USB stick connected, I have the following lines in the output of the dmesg command:

hub.c: new USB device 00:03.1-1.2, assigned address 3
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
  Vendor: Sony Model: Storage Media Rev: 0100

sda: Write Protect is off
Partition check:
 /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1
WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured

However to achieve that I had to install the following packages:

kmod-scsi-core - 2.4.35.4-brcm-2.4-1 -
kmod-usb-core - 2.4.35.4-brcm-2.4-1 -
kmod-usb-ohci - 2.4.35.4-brcm-2.4-1 -
kmod-usb-storage - 2.4.35.4-brcm-2.4-1 -
kmod-usb2 - 2.4.35.4-brcm-2.4-1 -

To mount my USB stick, I tried to issue the following commands:

root@OpenWrt:/etc# ls /dev/discs/disc0/
/dev/discs/disc0/disc   /dev/discs/disc0/part1
root@OpenWrt:/etc# mkdir /tmp/d1
root@OpenWrt:/etc# mount /dev/discs/disc0/part1 /tmp/d1
mount: mounting /dev/discs/disc0/part1 on /tmp/d1 failed: Invalid argument

The mounting failed, because I had no driver for the filesystem installed on the USB stick
Whan I installed the modules: kmod-fs-ext2,  kmod-fs-ext3, kmod-fs-vfat, the mounting has completed succesfully

root@OpenWrt:/etc# mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
/dev/root on /rom type squashfs (ro)
none on /dev type devfs (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
none on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
/dev/mtdblock/4 on /jffs type jffs2 (rw)
mini_fo:/jffs on / type mini_fo (rw)
none on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
192.168.1.2:/usr/local/nfs on /tmp/nfs type nfs (ro,v2,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,hard,udp,nolock,addr=192.168.1.2)
/dev/discs/disc0/part1 on /tmp/d1 type vfat (rw)

To make installing of packages easier, I install them from the nfs mounted directory from my server:

root@OpenWrt:/etc# mkdir /tmp/nfs
root@OpenWrt:/etc# mount 192.168.1.2:/usr/local/nfs /tmp/nfs -o ro,nolock

Sorry, I was not able to verify operation of the Bluetooth modules, because my bluetooth stick does not work with OpenWRT. It is unfortunately based on the Broadcom chipset (cat-ing from /proc/bus/usb/devices:

Vendor=0a5c ProdID=200a Rev= 0.04
S:  Manufacturer=Broadcom
S:  Product=BCM92035DGROM

And probably it needs some additional support to have it's firmware loaded sad.
(It works with BCM2033-FW.bin and BCM2033-MD.hex on my desktop machine)

I have recompiled my firmware including the options for webif (and for haserl), and almost everything
works fine.
The only exception is that the webif-olsr complains during the installation:

Installing webif-olsr (0.1-beta) to root...
Nothing to be done
An error ocurred, return value: 1.
Collected errors:
ERROR: Cannot satisfy the following dependencies for webif-olsr:
     olsrd-mod-tas

I didn't see the possibility to select the olsrd-mod-tas package in the "make menuconfig" sad .
So I had to configure the olsrd by hand. However after that configuration the olsrd works correctly.
