Topic: Do I have locked out myself? (WGT634U)

The content of this topic has been archived on 22 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hello,

I've installed the latest X-Wrt image on my Netgear WGT634U. After changing the configuration of the VLAN (deleting VLAN1) I can't reach the router anymore. It does not seem to be dead. I can still connect to the WLAN ESSID of which the router the AP is. It also still works fine as a switch (using two of the LAN ports). I just can't reach the router itself.
Is there any way to resest the machine to some kind of working state? I don't care about loss of config or whatever... Unfortunatly I don't have something like a serial cable at hand.

Thanks!

Florian

Really nobody has a hint on that for me?
Is there a chance I get into the device when it boots? Or is a serial cable the only possibility?

The WGT634U is different...

I thought when you flash a WGT634U with an OpenWRT firmware, you can enable boot wait.

I've found no information regarding boot wait and the WGT634U. Although IIRC I have read somewhere that it is not supported. Anyway I've flashed from the Netgear webinterface with the X-Wrt images and changed nothing like boot wait.

The boot loader on the WGT634U does not support boot_wait.

You need a serial cable (with a level converter), see the hardware page

I personally went with a 2nd OpenWRT supported router (Linksys WRTSL54GS) since I already had it.  I connected 1/8th inch stereo jacks on both serial ports of each router.  Then I just connect a 1/8" cable up between the 2 units, and it works great.

Access by serial console is best, especially if some configuration files got corrupted. http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Har … ar/WGT634U helps a lot with that; any mobile-phone usb-adapter will do. You may consider getting one so you're free to manipulate :-).

Well, that's true!

A serial-usb adapter like that on * will do it too? Of course I still need to do the wiring (buy a serial cable and cut through to get to the wires is my plan)

Be forewarned that the particular adapter you've noted is not sufficient to do as you'd like.  As I had mentioned you need a level converter because the voltages on the serial lines in the router are not high enough.   The cell-phone adapter deals with this by default, the adapter you link to does not.

Ok, that's good to know.
Is any mobile phone cable fine? Is there a particular sign I can use to see if a cable is suitable?

Go to the wgt634u hardware page linked in a couple of the above posts and check out the explanation of what to do for a serial console.  It'll answer all your questions.

I've read the WGT hardware pages a couple of times. Still it's not very easy to see what you need when you're not experienced with micro controllers and all those stuff.

Here's another page that might help:  Serial adapters

The discussion might have continued from here.
