I have the PuTTY Configuration. I've tried using a freeshell.org and its very different from what my book explains. I need a system, or a server that uses a user login similart to this.

[jdoe@whateverSystem]$       <-notice the dollar sign. I've seen on wiki that a previous or possibly current user has logged like that, with the dollar sign. freeshell.org has something like this:    sdf:/udd/o/jdoe>

<3 C++

Wrong section.

What you pointed out is the prompt.  Openwrt's prompt is "root@OpenWrt:~#"
The "#" means you are the super-user (root).  A "$" means you are a normal user.  Anything else is usually some sort of custom prompt that someone made up.

If you are talking about learning how to use Linux, here is the third result when googling "linux shell":

Os is this question specifically about using the OpenWRT command line?

Im running on windowsXP, and i downloaded a windows.zip from a 'LINUX and UNIX xterm' help site.

i extracted the files and ran the windows.exe only to have it pop-up and terminate immediately. So i went, start>run><specified the path> and i get what the exe contains.

this isnt working.

The link that u gave me, i need to run a similar program, on windows XP. i cannot access anything from the command line on my OS.

if it is Cygwin, Eureka!

This is not a linux help site, and I don't use windows so I can't help you install cygwin.

The correct site to download cygwin is http://cygwin.com and it should have howtos and installation guides that you can read.

use virtualbox and a real linux

try VMWARE PLAYER and a live CD of FEDORA or DSL
