Topic: Openwrt on edimax PS-1208mfg

Hi all,

I have successfully installed openwrt on the ps-1208 following the advice in this page, and with the help of Clem. Now, my question: is it possible to make hostapd log the authentication process for all the authentication attempts? I have found this post:

http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap … 16376.html

but I can't find the file /etc/syslog.conf in my ps.

Thanks an advance

Hi clem,

it seems to me that no ntp client is in your package repository. Is there a particular reason for that (like it, it will never work on the ps big_smile)?

Anyway, is it right if I add http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/1 … /packages/ to the repository list and download the ntp client form there? Or should I compile the ntp client by myself?

Thanks in advance

don't add the repository smile ps kernel isn't build with support for all the applications and hence it will segfault...

for the ntp client just add this in /etc/config/system :

config 'rdate'
    option 'interface' 'br-lan'
    list 'server' 'ptbtime1.ptb.de'

of course modify the interface line to put the interface on which your ps-1208 get the internet

and your ps-1208mfg will never be late wink

thanks clem, it works now...

Hi all!

I am currently using the print server as wireless access point, and I am satisfied with that. Actually, I came into possession of the Print Server (PS) because it was sold together with my epson printer (http://www.epson.it/Store/Stampanti-e-m … Fi-Edition). Now, I would like to connect the printer to my network via the print server/access point. Of course, I could connect the printer to the PS, but I won't be able to use the PS as wireless access point. Since the printer has itself a USB port, I was wondering whether I could connect the printer to the PS, and the USB drive (with all the data) to the printer, and make the PS boot through the usb drive (the one I am already using) via the printer... I know it sounds complicated, but my PC (which is at present connected to  printer) can boot a USB drive connected to the printer, so maybe I could do the same with the PS. Of course, I will have to install some printer driver as well, but I think that the hardest part is to make the PS boot via the printer. Any Idea? Suggestions?  Thanks

I just boot the PS without usb drive. I telnet into it, connected the printer and the log contains:

Jan  1 00:02:40 OpenWrt user.info kernel: usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
Jan  1 00:02:40 OpenWrt user.info kernel: scsi0 : usb-storage 1-1:1.2
Jan  1 00:02:41 OpenWrt user.notice kernel: scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access     EPSON    Stylus Storage   1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
Jan  1 00:02:41 OpenWrt user.notice kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk
root@OpenWrt:/#

however, if I also connect the usb drive to the printer, nothing comes out on dmesg, even if the USB drive light is on.

Any idea?

thanks

the best solution would be to use an usb HUB smile then connect the usb key and the printer on it smile don't know if it will work perfectly but another guy was using the ps as a music server so with and additional usb sound-card.

Thanks for the suggestion smile

I have another question: how can I mount a smb share on the ps, so that I can exploit more space? I fell like the cifs module is missing... In fact, if I can mount the share with smbclient, but smbfs is missing, and mount - t cifs gives:

root@OpenWrt:~# mount -t cifs //192.168.1.120/amuleto /mnt
mount: mounting //192.168.1.120/amuleto on /mnt failed: No such device

any suggestion?

thanks

btw, do you suggest to upgrade the firmware?

Hi !

Very very very (and very) good news from Edimax : source code package for the original firmware has been released by Edimax :

http://www.edimax.fr/fr/support_detail. … ;button=Go

It contains the kernel source code, rootfs and utilities to make new firmware images.

This is a perfect example of GPL license application smile

Thank You Edimax -_-

The sources have been released a long time ago and there is nothing interesting in those sources.
By the way they have been released after I requested the technical support multiple times wink

All the important part of code is provided as object, and you can't really build a kernel. Also, all the utilities have been compiled on a 64bit system.

Anyway it doesn't matter as openWRT is already running wink

Patches have been integrated in main trunk !

I have put a more elaborate tutorial on http://clemworkbench.fr/doku.php?id=en:ps1208mfg
There is explications to build openwrt for the print server.

For what it's worth by telnet, default login and password are edimax and software01

clem, I am trying to follow your guide at http://eriamond.dyndns.org/doku.php?id=ps1208mfg .
I downloaded the patches, and extracted them:

~/test/trunk$ ls
BSDmakefile         firmware-utils  Makefile       rules.mk  toolchain
Config.in           include         package        scripts   tools
docs                LICENSE         profile.patch  target    trx2edips.patch
feeds.conf.default  linux           README         tmp

however,

~/test/trunk$ patch -p1 < profile.patch
patching file linux/brcm47xx/profiles/PS-1208MFG.mk
Hunk #1 FAILED at 7.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file linux/brcm47xx/profiles/PS-1208MFG.mk.rej

and

~/test/trunk$ patch -p1 < patches
bash: patches: File o directory non esistente

which is the italian for "non existing file".

Please, what am I doing wrong?

thanks

Hi zanny,

I believe it's because openwrt code has been updated. however look by yourself to the file  linux/brcm47xx/profiles/PS-1208MFG.mk. Compare it with the file profile.patch and you will see the differences. Profile file are just parameters to pre-configure package selection in make menuconfig. So you can also start with the default profile in menuconfig and deselect the unneeded packages.

for the second problems it's because "patches" means for each patch in the tar.gz smile

By the way if you don't need special packages just take the openwrt builds from my website, it'll be much simpler for you

Hello,
I was wondering if it is really necessary to flash the firmware via TFTPD?
I used Telnet to connect to the print server and I entered the command:
ls /bin/

I saw two interesting commands:
flash
dump_flash.sh

Is it possible to put the OpenWRT firmware on a USB key and then flash the firmware via one of these commands after mounting the USB key filesystem?

Thank you

As long as i remember those two commands just dump and write the nvram but i'm not sure. Just open the file dump_flash.sh and see what is the code inside it.
Moreover i don't think you'll be able to mount the usb key as there is no support for other filesystems than ramfs.

Hello,

i'm currently trying to install openwrt on a ps 1208mfg but unfortunatly the files pasted here (http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/edimax/ps-1208mfg) are as down as the host site.

So I have multiple questions:
Where can I download filesps1208mfg.tar.gz, needed to build an own openwrt?
Where can I get the patches mentioned at above pasted page?
Is there any change of getting it into flash? Did anyone tried to change flash to the 8MB version of this NOR flash series?

Today I connected a serial cable to it, but i cant find any sane settings (baud rate, etc) for it. Normally it should have 115k 8-n-1 but the output was kind a crap looking like wrong baud rate but on any baud rate i choose, i got bad output. What do i have to do to get serial output of the original firmware?

Thanks for the help!

I know its been a while, but can someone post an image that works for this? (All the links seem to be broken)

look here: clemworkbench.fr-Backup

Dear all,

I am still using the printserver as access point. Now, I feel I need to update the mac80211 driver. Any ideas/suggestion on how to do it?
Thanks
