Hi,

Ive used here for about a year a well working wds-lan with 4x WRT54G. Now I wanted  to expand the network and flashed the new WhiteRussian RC3 for first test to an new WRT54GS v1.1 and a old WRT54G v2, using WEP, no afterburner, fixed adresses, this two routers only.

Now no WDS ist working and the WEP-keys arent working, too :-(

After reading lots of forum-articles im now really confused about what could be wrong.

Wired use (as router) works fine, but I cant connect by WLan, if i remove some cable.

Furthermore, as you can see, i've tried to disable the afterburner and so on, how described in the WDS-threads and several other things. Maybe there is some removable stuff in my nvram, I dont know.

Ok, for faster reading a short list of my tries:

1. wl0_wds gets crosswise the MAC of the alternate router
2. bringing boardflags from 0x318 to 0x118 for the wrt54gs
3. disabling wl0_afterburner
3. enabling wl0_wds
4. enanbling wl0_wep
5. choosing explizitly channel 3 for testing reasons for both machines
6. setting SSID and WEP-key 1 for both machines
7. setting used wl0_wep key=1 for both
8. setting wl0_key=1
9. setting wl0_key1=passphrase

3. disabling wl0_afterburner
3. enabling wl0_wds_enable
4. enanbling wl0_wep
5. choosing explizitly channel 3 for testing reasons for both machines
6. setting SSID and WEP-key 1 for both machines
7. setting used wl0_wep key=1 for both
8. setting wl0_key=1
9. setting wl0_key1=passphrase
10. setting different ip-adresses
11. setting radio on
12. deleting some unused wl_ ..
13. disabling wl0_lazywds

last, but not least (keys will be changed ;-) ) the iwconfig from WRT54GS:

wds0.49153  no wireless extensions.

and from the WRT54G:

Furthermore, as you can see, i've tried to disable the afterburner and so on, how described in the WDS-threads and several other things. Maybe there is some removable stuff in my nvram, I dont know.

Whats wrong in my Configuration?

The good news is that the  wds0.49153 entries you see in iwconfig and the wds0.4915 (which is really the same wds0.49153, but ifconfig truncates the interface name) prove that your WDS connections are up.

If your "WDS interfaces" are up and things still aren't working, then the problem is probably that they haven't been added to the br0 bridge.

Post the results of the command brctl show

If you dont see the wds0.49153 in your br0 bridge, then the command to fix it is (IIRC):

brctl addif br0 wds0.49153

Good idea! this command has following result:

# brctl show
bridge name     bridge id               STP enabled     interfaces
br0             8000.0014bf72e189       no              vlan0
                                                        eth1
                                                        wds0.49153

So this looks ok. But Yesterday Night i found the solution! :-)

Last year the WEP-value was able to recognize, if the key was written in ASCII or Hex, so if I changed the WEP-key from "mySecret" to "s:mySecret", the WLan was becoming active (before, the encryption key was shown "off" with iwconfig an "on" with wl, so i dont know, what the system was doing in this case). BTW, now the router needs about two minutes for staying ready, so maybe he isnt configured 100% correct anyway. But it works!

BTW, whats the reason for the name "wds0.49153"? Is it a kind of version number?
