is there any way to modify wrt54g to use atheros wifi chip? maybe another minipci slot expansion. i want to use wrt54g on 5ghz.

You need a 1.0 hardware if you want do this with a WRT. The newer versions has the Wifi on board.
The Asus 500g (but not 500 g deluxe) has the wifi card in a minipci slot.
You'll also need the madwifi driver if you want to use an atheros card, it's in the whiterussian CVS (SVN now?).
