Topic: WRE54G not working

The content of this topic has been archived on 19 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

hi

i'm using a whiterussion RC2 on a WRT54GS v1.1 and expand the WLAN with a WRE54G ver1 (without ethernet port) which is acually working perfectly.

linksys "upgraded"(?) their products and currently ship WRE54G ver.2 with an integrated fast ethernet port. i don't get them working: they do not expand my wlan instead they drop all packets from the notebooks which are connected to them.

i noticed that openwrt loaded a special interface (i forgot the name but it was no eth*, vlan* or br* device) with the old extenders. the new extenders (ver2) did not force openwrt to load this interface.

btw: the ip address of the extenders are very tough. i tried to change them to 192.168.192.240/24 via the web interface but only one of the three devices really changed to the new address... strange.

i tried all combinations of WRT54GS running both whiterussian RC2 and whiterussian RC3 with
WRE54G ver2 firmware 2.0.1.12 and  and the initially installed firmware 2.02.05

another strange thing: the extenders come with a firmware: v2.02.05 and on the linksys.com website is only v2.0.1.12 for download available (which is less than the one installed)

i would be happy for any hint .. thanx!

sorry. the thread topic should not be WRE54GS but instead WRE54G

I change the title right now. BTW afaik the v2 is marvell based, so it's not supported.

thanx.

i dont want to install openwrt on it - so it does not have to be "supported"

instead i want to use the original firmware from linksys in order to extend a openwrt based wrt54gs wlan.

Then maybe try http://linksysinfo.org , but I doubt they can help. Linksys is famous to make hardware revisions incompatible hmm

does openwrt has to support such range expanders like the wrt54g? is any software-pice responsible for handling the wre?

The WRE54G v1 could use openwrt as it's firmware, but noone tried it. And without serial console (due to the lack of ethernet) i won't try to flash it, if I were You.
The "range expanding" is basically nothing more then WET mode imho.

thanx 4 your quick resonse. what i wanted to know is, if the WRT needs some code or piece of software to "understand" the WRE. i think with WRE v1 the WRT opened up an interface to talk to the WRE but i dont know if its 1) correct and 2) nessecary.

IMHO (I'm not sure)
1) wrong, the WRE simple joines as a wireless bridge 2) check 1) smile

hmm. so i got confused.

wrt54gs v4 with original linksys firmware + wre54g ver2 works
wrt54gs v1.1 with openwrt rc3 + wre54g ver2 does not work

so if the wre does not influence the wrt, it might be that the extenders work with
wrt54gs v4 with openwrt rc3 + wre54g ver2 ??

I just know, what should it do hardware and software wise, no idea, how Linksys implemented their auto-setup craps smile

The discussion might have continued from here.
