Topic: intended 'state of affairs' in WhiteRussian?

hi all.

new here.

currently using Sveasoft/Talisman1.1 on Linksys WRT54GX v1.0.

have not yet made the switch to openWRT, but exploring seriously.

have a good sense of breadth of cmd line capabilities and package availability.

question re: webif ... can't really tell without installing; catch-22 for now.

in it's soon-to-be-released incarnation, how 'feature complete' is it?  specifically, is the cmd line still req'd for "most" installs?

yes, i know it's a fuzzy question ... but the answer is currently fuzzy as well :-}

bottom line, i'm trying to figure out how ready-for-prime-time it is intended to be, and whether it can be unleashed on clients ...

thx 4 any/all comments!

richard

OpenWrt is a linux distrubution; knowledge of the linux command line is essential for running it. The web interface is not designed to and will not replace the commandline.

> The web interface is not designed to

is there, then, a design document defining what the interface *is* supposed/expected to do?  which parameters *will* it allow control of?

an/one example question would be: to set WAN & LAN pppoe MTU, can i do that via webif, or only via cmd line? and so on and so forth ...

or, is the answer to be "install it and see for yourself"?

A quick overview of what you can do with the web interface right now:

INFO:
Dump router version, MAC address, etc...
  See who the developers are

STATUS:
See wireless (eth1 on my box) status

SYSTEM:
Set hostname and turn boot_wait on/off
See what packages are installed and install/remove packages from a list
  Firmware upgrade

NETWORK:
Set LAN config (IP address, netmask, gateway)
  Set LAN DNS server address
Set WAN to use DHCP, PPoE, or static IP info
Set wireless mode, encryption type, and keys
  Add WDS connections
Add hostnames (goes directly to /etc/hosts)
  Add static DHCP addresses/MACs

Everything else you're probably used to (i.e. port forwarding, QoS) has to be done "manually"

thanks. that helps ...

i've also found http://openwrt.inf.fh-brs.de/~nbd/webif … ig.sh.html which gives me a 'gander', but the links point to 192.x.x.x ... not helpful for exploring.

i still hope to find a design/goals doc if it exists ... to determine for myself whether to consider openwrt+webif a replcaement, and alternative, or a product of a different color ...

cheers,

richard

I doubt you will find a design/goals doc anywhere.  You may check under the Developers Only forum.  Check the sticky thread about wanting Web Interface Developers.  I beleive it was some result of their thread which is now included with RC4.  As this is the first release candidate with a web interface, and only released a week or so ago - a lot of people haven't made the jump to web interface.  That post is probably your best bet as far as information goes.

As for unleashing it on clients (i.e. the average stupid user) I seriously doubt it is, or ever will be stupid friendly.  At my office we are going to be pushing it out to some of our people here, but I have opened SSH on the wan port and refuse to let them configure anything.

that's the experience so far ...

i just realized that the webif is *new* to RC4 ... my initial -- and apparently incorrect -- understanding was that this was rc4 *of* webif, as well.

clear for the 'avg' user ... tho, i must say, i find a quick tweak/change via a good gui is occassionally helpful to/appreciated by even the more experienced user ...

thx!

richard

you might want to check
http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=3476

although this is neither intended as an interface for an "one-router-environment" (might be a little bit overkill) nor is it suitable for the 'avg' user (and i don't think the ongoing development will bring it anywhere near that point)
