OK, so I just flashed my WRT54G with openwrt-wrt54g-jffs2.bin... I meant to install HyperWRT... but that's not really important now. So, I pull up the web interface for the router. Whenever I try to do anything it prompts me to create a password. Whenever I try to do so I get the followinge error:

Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5, maximum of 8 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Enter new password:
Re-enter new password:
passwd: An error occurred updating the password file.

/bin/sh: cannot create /etc/httpd.conf: Read-only file system
/bin/sh: cannot create /etc/httpd.conf: Read-only file system

So I effectively can't do anything, not even get my router to a different firmware. I tried using the Linksys auto-update utility for Windows only for it to tell me it can't get a response from the router with either the usual default admin/admin or my old password.

What do I do guys?

I think you need to log using telnet. Set your password using the passwd command then use the web interface or ssh to access your router

With the jffs2 version you need to reboot the router a second time to make the fs writeable. So login via telnet, do a "reboot", when it's done login again and set your password.

OK.. so I was able to set my password (thanks for that, btw), but I still can't log in. Is the default username something other than admin?

As with most Unix/Linux systems it's "root", not "admin".

ahh, of course. thanks!

OK.. so I used the firmware upgrade part of the web GUI to revery back to default Linksys firmware... now I can't access the web GUI. It still tries to go to the OpenWRT page (http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/webif.sh) and gives a 404 error...

Have you read through these instructions?

Oh, and this thread (which is a sticky) has some good advice as well.
