AFAIK there aren't sources for this wireless chip.

Actiontec PK5001A - openwrt source (only modification found was hostapd driver_mtlk patch)
BT HomeHub 4 - OpenRG (hostapd different driver_mtlk variant)
Livebox 2.1 - unknown
W921V - unknown
TD-W8980 - Full source hostapd + driver

These devices use Wave300 wireless chip.

Actiontec hostapd patch - hostapd as custom feed :

+# hostapd depends on strong random number generation being available from the
+# operating system. os_get_random() function is used to fetch random data when
+# needed, e.g., for key generation. On Linux and BSD systems, this works by
+# reading /dev/urandom. It should be noted that the OS entropy pool needs to be
+# properly initialized before hostapd is started. This is important especially
+# on embedded devices that do not have a hardware random number generator and
+# may by default start up with minimal entropy available for random number
+# generation.
+#
+# As a safety net, hostapd is by default trying to internally collect
+# additional entropy for generating random data to mix in with the data
+# fetched from the OS. This by itself is not considered to be very strong, but
+# it may help in cases where the system pool is not initialized properly.
+# However, it is very strongly recommended that the system pool is initialized
+# with enough entropy either by using hardware assisted random number
+# generator or by storing state over device reboots.
+#
+# hostapd can be configured to maintain its own entropy store over restarts to
+# enhance random number generation. This is not perfect, but it is much more
+# secure than using the same sequence of random numbers after every reboot.
+# This can be enabled with -e<entropy file> command line option. The specified
+# file needs to be readable and writable by hostapd.
+#
+# If the os_get_random() is known to provide strong random data (e.g., on
+# Linux/BSD, the board in question is known to have reliable source of random
+# data from /dev/urandom), the internal hostapd random pool can be disabled.
+# This will save some in binary size and CPU use. However, this should only be
+# considered for builds that are known to be used on devices that meet the
+# requirements described above.

+# from the operating system. os_get_random() function is used to fetch random
+# data when needed, e.g., for key generation. On Linux and BSD systems, this

+# important especially on embedded devices that do not have a hardware random
+# number generator and may by default start up with minimal entropy available
+# for random number generation.
+#
+# As a safety net, wpa_supplicant is by default trying to internally collect

+# from the OS. This by itself is not considered to be very strong, but it may
+# help in cases where the system pool is not initialized properly. However, it
+# is very strongly recommended that the system pool is initialized with enough
+# entropy either by using hardware assisted random number generator or by
+# storing state over device reboots.
+#
+# wpa_supplicant can be configured to maintain its own entropy store over

I've tried to port it by my own but unfortunately my knowledge is way to small to do so.

Anyone can help ?

Refreshing topic!

The driver ports well to 3.3.8 kernel, nedds little changes.
On newer kernels 3.8+ you have to patch /proc subsystem control.

The source needs some patching - firstly you have to link rflib.a with kernel module.

To run the radio you need firmware and calibration data,
everything is here http://speedy.sh/S3Sdg/mtlk-fw.7z

You have to select if you want to work ONLY in master or managed mode (simultaneous work is NOT possible), when loading module. Everything is controlled with wireless-tools, and driver is incompatible with mac80211.

The driver uses WEXT or any other API instead nl802111? Bad news...

More bad news:

This driver doesn't support VAPs too. It can only work as a one client or as an one AP. WDS is also possible, but not compatible with other devices. There is closed source module kernel for 2.6.21, with VAPs, 2 times bigger.

Finally driver 3.1 works as AP (needed patch for hostapd was included in this topic), and original wpa_supplicant is working with wext (but this from OpenWRT does nothing - it is NOT WORKING).

Driver doesn't know what clients are connected, knows nothing about power from STA and transmit rates. It can NOT control the transmit power. If you disable Automatic Channel Selection (?) the driver will panic kernel.
mdk3 tool managed to crash the system.
Interface seems to be great (debug and memleak tools, controling parameters via iwpriv - looks good).... rather was for 2007 year. Driver is complicated: you have two firmwares, one for 802.11 low layer, some radio calibration data and closed-source RFlib. Then some abstraction layers, ioctl codes for linux and wireless tools and some other routines.
Transmit rates are funny. The maximum I got was about 16 Mb/s (20MHz bandwidth). The same for Open and WPA2
Moreover - it uses 100% CPU. You have no Ad-Hoc, mesh, nor monitor mode. You can also forget about VAP.
One of the worst drivers I have ever seen, just outdated shit produced by Israel. It seems that they have labs and (hopefully) not released many wireless chipsets.

The 3.1 driver(only one with partially released source) is a REALLY piece of shit. 3.2 driver is not released publicly, and we have only binary bloobs. Very dirty work for now. Both driver use the 100% CPU, and make device very hot. WLAN driver is crashing when you try to unload it with connected clients. After some times it denies ANY authentication. It is extremely unstable with low distance (can crash other devices), seems to be stable at larger distance - but upload speed (client -> Wave 300 AP) is about 1Mbit (Mb/s not MB/s)

Now, OpenWRT recognises this WiFi interface, and allows to set basic parameters. Patch is needed to enable WPA in LUCI web interface. The monitor secion is empty - no information at all (wireless is visible as turned off). It is NOT possible to receiver information about signal levels, only packets from associated clients. EEPROM is visible and readable, but it contains nothing (my Wave300 starts with MAC 00:**:**:00:00:00)

I can send everything needed to run on OpenWRT as I described above.

UPDATE:

There is a Metalink tool called mtdump - it extracts necessary statistic data about connected clients, and communicates with obsolete IOCTL mechanism.
After some more tests, driver can be sometimes stable, sometimes it does strange things. If someone dares to rewrite it to use nl80211 it could be very great. The most similar driver to it in my opinion is mwl8k - firmware bloob for AP and for STA; only configured by cfg80211. The whole RF part, AOCS, firmware are closed-source binary bloobs. OSAL, country management and many other things are open source. I haven't tested WPS, it makes nosense for me.

Metalink driver can be easily integrated to luci - it is very similar to handle to broadcom wl/nas; so small modifications do it work.
I have prepared this WiFi part - mainly the /lib/wifi/mtlk.sh and some other files. There is working image here: http://forum.superspot.pl/showthread.ph … 960#pid960 with MTLK driver. Currently we haven't done statistics part.

Another UPDATE:

After writing some code to iwinfo library - chip is visible and you can get some information about connected clients (via WEXT, just one IOCTL). You will find all necessary files here: http://forum.superspot.pl/attachment.php?aid=91 (use firmware-mod-kit to extract):

/lib/modules/mtlk.ko - kernel module (3.1) for Linux 3.3.8 (OpenWRT AA) with RFLIB included (binary bloob)
/lib/firmware/ProgModel* - calibration data (2 files for AP mode and 2 for STA mode)
/lib/firmware/contr_lm.bin - Lower mac
/lib/firmware/ap_upper.bin /lib/firmware/sta_upper.bin - Upper mac
/lib/wifi/mtlk.sh - bridge between linux driver and OpenWRT interface (for configuring). It doesn't support VAP at all (because driver doesn't too). It doesn't support TKIP (just for simplicity), nor WEP (in AP mode - for security), nor WPA Enterprise (driver doesn't too)
patched /usr/lib/libiwinfo.so - bridge between linux driver and OpenWRT interface (for getting statistics)
patched /usr/lib/lua/iwinfo.so - the same for LUA scripts
patched hostapd(added mtlk driver) and raw wpa_supplicant (only WEXT support) - /usr/sbin/mtlk-ap and /usr/sbin/mtlk-sta; only necessary with WPA/WPA2

I found some code that implements Association - so it could be possible to read and write raw frames. It could be possible to write a driver for monitor mode, and adapt it to mac80211 subsystem - we'd get fully working wireless driver.
Now we should know how to cooperate with radio's processor.

Update: Full driver (3.2) source was found somewhere in GPL archive.
There is VAP support, and included RFLIB source.

After patching PCI - it can be used in TP-Link W9980/W8980 for enabling 5GHz wireless in OpenWRT

I uploaded it here: http://www.speedyshare.com/rgYPx/wave30 … .48.tar.gz (version from April 2012)

This needs more work, especially:
- Porting driver for kernel 3.10/3.18/next - there are some small changes and one have to reimplement (or drop) /proc/ debug information support

- Prepare OpenWRT WiFi driver for this driver. I did it with an older version - but this one has VAP support. One also have to patch libiwinfo (you can get statistics with one IOCTL) and lua scripts for LuCI.
OR
- rewrite driver to use cfg80211 instead of obsolete wext.

- Extract firmware and progmodels from OEM firmware (fmk tool will help you)

Link is dead, can you reupload it or link to the original source? I cannot find anything with that name on the net. Thanks.

Hello,

I've been porting sources wave300-3.2.1.1.48.tar.gz to kernel 4.4.38.

After many hours, compilation is successful. However, I've got issues during init of the pci bus.

As it seems there's been previous portings of the sources, could someone make them reachable in order to check them?

Thanks in advance,

Congrats for achieving compilation, unfortunately I've yet not started in porting it, so I cannot provide anything useful for now, however the problem on PCI bus initialization is known on the same router I was working on (TDW8980). If I do not remember badly the problem was that it seems not standard and not available over the GPL kernel sources released by TP Link. I think the only way to understand what's going on is to get a peek in the binary blob from the closed source firmware itself, or from his bootlog.

I would love to help (if I have time) if you want to share your work with us.

Regards,

Hi Rodomar705,

Sure I can share the code. We are here for that, aren't we?

My only concern is the "propietary" disclaimer of all the original code. I don't want to get into legal troubles for all the changes I've done.

->Could a senior on this GPL stuff enlighten us on what is the best way to publish modified propietary sources?

On the other hand, I don't think there's any problem to send you in private my work. I just need to do some tidy up.

Which platform are you using? Mine is ARV7519RW22 (Livebox 2.1).

Keep in touch,
Mandrake

Mine is TP-Link TD W8980.

About GPL stuff, unfortunately I don't have the legal knowledge to answer, let's hope that someone else will help us to clear that up.

In the meantime, I have prepared the sources (in fact it's a development kit for many tools, not just the driver).

I have also created some instructions in order to help the  setup for compilation.

However, I don't see any means in the Openwrt forum (here) to send private messages.

Am I wrong? Could an administrator support us?

Apparently you're right, it seems that's there is no way to send private messages. Anyway, unfortunately i'm having issues with this router and the latest bleeding edge, it seems that wifi and Luci stops randomly to respond after a while, so for now i'm rolling back to the OEM firmware. I will try to understand where the actual PCI express is configured in this router while i'm at that, will keep you posted if i get anything new.

Regards.

Forgive me if i am making unnecessary comments for i am not knowledgeable on GPL stuff but when i saw the question "what is the best way to publish modified propietary sources?" I remembered that openwrt build system use patches rather than modifying code directly. Wouldn't posting diff patches to already released proprietary code applicable in this case ?

To me it make sense, since OpenWRT does the same thing to share code, but again, I'm not studying law so I can't be taken as a reliable source.

Maybe if Mandrake check the license in the tarball itself from diffed patched code with OpenWRT to see if the actual license in them is similar to the driver for this Wave 300 5 Ghz driver he will make more confident to share the actual patches.

Let's wait for him to share his ideas (and sorry for the poor quality of my english),
