Topic: when will "ASUS RT-AC56U" be supported?

The content of this topic has been archived on 20 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

"ASUS RT-AC56U" is very good, but right now , openwrt not supported this router, plesse make it works, 3ks.

Broadcom has basically very minor support for Linux.
DD-WRT works with Asus RT-AC56U because they use closed broadcom drivers.

Probably you have to get into some kind of agreement with broadcom because the DD-WRT version of Drivers (AP activated) is different from Ubuntu or what is available on their homepage.

Their closed "STA" drivers are often old (5.x) - they dont have the "AP" feature (different package), and dont support new chips.
Some vendors get newer closed driver versions (Ubuntu 6.x) and for example Archlinux has to modify them to gain support for the same hardware (Link).

Even new Chips or widely used chips (even with earlier revisions) dont have support (see brcmfmac / brcmsmac or wireless-next git).

You can of course inquire further on the wireless-devel mailing list  ( archive link )

I would suggest to take a look at TP-Link Archer C7
the ac wlan driver isn't in current kernel yet

OpenWRT support: https://dev.openwrt.org/changeset/36790
OpenWRT wiki: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wdr7500
open wlan driver for 802.11ac wlan: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath10k
trunk images available: http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/

Very nice if anyone actually tries the image on a device and reports back the actual result.
In general, the existence of an image for an otherwise unsupported router could mean anything from
a) The image barely works at all, and can not be installed via std web gui, and may brick the router
to
b) Most things work just fine, except a few features (like wireless AC mode, or some other wireless stuff)

The discussion might have continued from here.
