Topic: How to setup OpenWRT on ASUS WL-HDD?

The content of this topic has been archived on 7 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I just have a ASUS WL-HDD box in front of me, and I would like to flash it with OpenWRT.

However, firmware upgrade fails when I try to do it via the web interface; with tftp I can't even upload a file (it timeouts).

Has anyone successfully installed OpenWRT on ASUS WL-HDD?

I will answer myself.

You need openwrt-brcm-2.4-jffs2-4MB.trx image.

1. Start wl-hdd in faisafe mode (power off, press reset button, power on, release the button, the power led should be blinking)
2. Start Firmware Restoration tool (it's on WL-HDD CD), and try to upload the firmware - it will fail, that's fine
3. Now you can upload the OpenWRT image with tftp

You have to do step 2, otherwise you won't be able to upload the firmware via tftp in step 3.

in my case restoration tool didn't fail and send properly openwrt firmware to wl-hdd

Maybe you had a different WL-HDD version?

I notice that WL-HDD listed on http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware has a 200 MHz CPU, mine has only 125 MHz sad (I added it to the wiki).

# dmesg|grep CPU
CPU revision is: 00024000
CPU: BCM4710 rev 0 at 125 MHz

What CPU does your WL-HDD have?

the same 125MHz sad I think someone made mistake because earlier it was always 125

I know who changed this. See this diff from the TableOfHardware.

I can also only remember the 125MHz version of the WL-HDD. Anyway the Wiki is already a mess.
