Topic: Cisco Meraki MR12 Ethernet

The content of this topic has been archived between 25 Mar 2018 and 6 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

I have the Attitude Adjustment (ar71xx) release uImage and jffs2-64k rootfs flashed onto a new Cisco Meraki MR12. While the unit boots properly, the ethernet ports don't show up. I've done some research and it seems like it's an easy fix (ethernet PHY mask patch), but I'm not sure which files to modify in the 12.09 source or what values for the mask will work.

The frustrating thing is that the Kamikaze initramfs image (2.6/ar71xx/21397) recognizes the ports, but won't mount the jffs2 rootfs on boot, although mounting the rootfs from the commandline works. My thought is that the mask values from the Kamikaze AG71xx driver might be able to be ported over. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I've also tried using the latest snapshot which gives the same result as the 12.09 release.

If we can get this working, I'll be more than happy to write the wiki page for it.

Here are three boot logs:

How's the network file on Attitude Adjustment?

Any luck with the Attitude Adjustment?

No luck yet... I'll post the network file when I get back to my desk.

Alright so I know I'm digging up an old thread but I thought I'd throw in what I've managed to do so far.

I was able to flash the generic ap96 kernel and rootfs for 12.09 and have it work to an extent. On first boot I had to drop it in to safe mode and delete all USB related kernel modules or else it would for some reason get hung up on them, no idea why. After that and a quick reboot it the NIC would come up perfectly and I can bring up the radios and all was fine and dandy.

Now the problem is, is the kernel has hard coded bootargs so the flash layout was all messed up so every time I booted in to openwrt it would corrupt the uboot env, thus making openwrt no longer boot.

I'm going to read up and see if I can compile a custom kernel tomorrow and see how far I can get.

Why don't you use trunk or BB RC1?

I'm going to give BB a try after a good nights rest. I've just been using the precompiled binaries for this so far as well. Haven't set up anything to actually compile it myself, that'll be a job for tomorrow.

Watching this thread with interest... Thanks for your efforts so far, from what I've read you've got the closest to a working installation of an alt firmware on this hardware.

Could someone point me in the rough direction of flashing the two images above to an MR12 please?  Wouldn't mind having a play about myself.  Do I need a serial cable made up, or can I do it via TFTP?

Thanks in advance.

Overview:
Incredibly affordable, cloud-managed wireless LAN The Cisco Meraki MR12 is an enterprise class, single-radio 802.11n cloud-managed access point designed for deployments in small-to-medium businesses, home and branch offices, hotels and retail stores. The MR12 uses advanced 802.11n technologies including MIMO, beam forming and channel bonding to deliver the throughput and reliable coverage required by the most demanding business applications.

MR12 and Cisco Meraki Cloud Management: A Powerful Combo

great news from good investments

The MR12 is managed via the Cisco Meraki cloud, with an intuitive browser-based interface that lets you get up and running quickly without training or certifications. Since the MR12 is self-configuring and managed over the web, you can even deploy the MR12 at a remote location without on-site IT staff.

The MR12 is monitored 24x7 via the cloud, which delivers real-time alerts if your network encounters problems. Remote diagnostics tools enable real-time troubleshooting over the web, meaning multisite, distributed networks can be managed remotely.

The MR12’s firmware is always kept up to date from the cloud. New features, bug fixes, and enhancements are delivered seamlessly over the web, so you never have to manually download software updates or worry about missing security patches.

How are you guys getting on?

I'm in the process of building my own image to flash later on.  Have left out all the USB stuff as above to see if that helps.  Be interesting to see if BB RC2 works.

Am I OK flashing via the raw_upgrade page (http://10.128.128.128/configure/raw_upgrade.html), or am I better to use TFTP?

Thanks in advance.

Nobody?  sad

Trying to get this going myself using the latest SVN. Currently I can get it to boot and mount the SPI partitions, but I am having issues with the NIC/WiFi Driver loading the devices.

I am also super interested in this thread.  I have two MR12's, one off license and one with 10 months left.  I am always interested in repurposing old hardware especially for use in not-for-profits with no budget for IT.
Watching closely and glad to help out with documentation and / or hardware contributions.

How did you flash yours?  Serial/TFTP?

I am building tftp bootable images and testing that way. As per OP, the issue with the ethernet seems that the ethernet's PHY mask needs to be added to the driver, but I am having a hard time finding where to do that. I will spend more time on it this weekend.

EDIT: Just as an update, I have successfully got the LED's mapped (Power and WAN link work) as well as the main eth interface online with the latest nightlies. Once I get the other NIC to come online, I will share my work to see if anyone else can help me bring the Wi-Fi up.

Just put up what I have done so far on a repo:

https://github.com/riptidewave93/Openwrt-MR12

Here is the first release with working eth0, bootable by TFTP:

https://github.com/riptidewave93/Openwr … -R0.1A.zip

At this point, I am not sure how much more I can do as the rest of the fixing may be beyond my skills. It would be nice to keep all the work centralized in one repository until OpenWRT picks up support for this officially, so please feel free to submit pull requests.

Nice!  Good starting point.

Know what you mean about not wanting to commit it to flash, that's what got me in this damned mess!

Have you seen the stock flash layout?

Bump for this, thought this would have generated loads of interest given how many expiring MR12s there are out there!

I'm gonna bump this as well wink My MR12 license is slowly coming to an end and I'd love to keep using it with OpenWrt.

Spent more time on this today, without much luck. Rebased the repo to work with the latest src.

If anyone out there wants to give this a shot, feel free to contact me (chrisrblake93 at gmail) and I can set you up with remote serial and power access to the unit.

If it helps I dug out the ar7240.h file from the source files released my Meraki. Supposedly this is what is used by the device configuration on the 2.6.16.16 kernel they use.

This may have the Wifi Calibration address we need to get wifi working

EDIT: WLAN0 now shows up, if I can get it to actually do something I will update the src on github and push a new release.

EDIT2: Now with working Wi-Fi! Source is updated, and a new TFTP image is out big_smile big_smile

Congrats dude!

I'm going to the extreme of desoldering my SOIC this weekend to reflash back to stock.  Can't get it to work any other way.

Hopefully I'll be able to assist more after then.

Also got an MR18 at home to tinker about with too now.

Good luck restoring the firmware!

As for the MR18, I have no idea how close to the MR12 it is, but from the looks of things the MR16 and MR12 share a lot of the same code, so I wouldn't be surprised if my tftp image worked on one of those.

Later this week I plan on re-mapping the LED's for WiFi and Power (no one likes an orange power light), and hopefully I can figure out the 2nd NIC and reset button. If that can all get fixed then I will make a request on dev.openwrt.org to see if it can get merged upstream.

Superb!

The thing we really need to work is how to get this permanently flashed to the meraki unit.  I'm happy to trial layouts once I've got a path back should I do what I did last time.
