Topic: Asus RT-AC87U support?

Is it possible that Asus' RT-AC87U gets OpenWRT support? Its price is high, but the hardware sounds awesome

BCM4360 is still the long way from being supported. Please boot OpenWrt on this device (bcm53xx target) and provide us a boot log, so we can see hardware details.

There's no open source driver for the wireless so I doubt it.

I'm gonna do that when my device arrives (might take a while since it isn't available in europe right now)

This is a bit funny device (https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_RT-AC87U):
1) Seems to have 256 MiB + 128 MiB of RAM
2) Uses BCM4360 (802.11ac capable chipset) for... 2.4 GHz band

Anyway, I've added basic support for Asus RT-AC87U in https://dev.openwrt.org/changeset/44051/

If anyone is brave to test it, I'm waiting for hearing results smile

One day it should also appear in http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/bcm53xx/ , but right now there are some problems with buildbot.

Broadcom wireless is still not well supported in openwrt (and don't hold your breath for significantly better support unless Broadcom changes their policy on open source wireless drivers).

LOL, but which serial port, from pictures I've seen it looks like there's two.

There might be one for the main router and one for the Quantenna subsystem it runs on the 5Ghz wireless.

IIUC the BCM4360 won't work any time soon and I'm not sure that using the Quantenna binary blob for the 5GHz wireless will be well received by the OpenWrt community.

If I can get OpenWrt running on the R8000 reliably enough to use as my main router I'd consider opening mine up and installing a test image to provide the needed info.

Interestingly I didn't see the PEX8603 show up in the above boot log but then it was hidden in the R8000 boot too so it may be in there.

Double LOL, but maybe the Ethernet will just work(tm) on it, wink

and then hangs.

It's not possible to load the OpenWRT firmware through the web interface because it complains about the signature.
I wasn't able to load the OpenWRT firmware using the ASUS Firmware restoration utility with the router in recovery more, it would attempt the load and then stop claiming it was cancelled.
I could only load the firmware with the router in recovery mode and then tftp to the device, a power cycle was also required.

This:

is because the BCM53012 needs the same fixup as the BCM53011.

I have a patch for that, and since it looks like I won't get the Ethernet working on the R8000 any time soon, I'm going to post what I have so far  in the next day or two.
