There is a tool called efax to send/receive faxes with Class 1, 2 or 2.0 fax modem: http://linux.die.net/man/1/efax
Some time ago someone had written an OpenWrt package for it but as fas as I know it has not been pushed into trunk yet.

I, too, wonder why. BTW, I have no problem to build for an ARM Kirkwood platform for my Seagate Dockstar.
