Topic: Is tl-wr740n v2.5 supported? - [SOLVED]

The content of this topic has been archived on 15 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hello!

Do you know the hardware specs of tl-wr740n v2.5 /flash, cpu, ram/ and if it is supported by OpenWRT B.B? Can't find v2 image in the repository nor anything about this particular version at the OpenWrt Support page for the given model.

Thank you in advance!

Hello,

My hardware: TL-WR740N V2.1, works fine for me since AA.
I just try to update to CC but I can't install Luci interface: no enough space.

I downgrade to BB:  BARRIER BREAKER (14.07, r42625) works fine.

As far as I have read: openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr741nd-v1-squashfs-factory.bin is fine up to v2.5 hardware (741ND same hardware 740N)

Good day,
Laurent.

Thank you for your reply, Laurent!

Dunno if the information in the above links is accurate but maybe BB "openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr741nd-v2-squashfs-factory.bin" image should do the trick or brick it, since there is no wr740n v2 image, which is a bit strange if the hardware is identical.

Btw, did you use the "wr741nd-v1" image with your TL-WR740N V2.1?

Dont listen to me until you confirm
I remember about a year ago flashing a 740 V2 with 740 V1 file cause DD-WRT didn't have a file for V2 then, I don't read today what I read then, but I remember it said V 1&2 use same file, look at the picture on their webrevert they use only one file for both.

I can't be 100% sure, I was using BB and my TL-WR740N v2.1 was identified as TL-WR741ND
I try CC but can't have a working Luci (not enough space ?)
I try to downgrade to BB but without Luci I have to use mtd command, and some post tell me take care of boot part of the file.

Finally I go back to tp-link firmware using revert file from dd-wrt: exactly the one you point @danymarc
(something like cd /tmp ; mv wr740nv1_v2_webrevert.bin tp-link.bin ; mtd -r write /tmp/tp-link.bin firmware)
the main problem when you try to update to openwrt coming from tp-link firmware is file check give error code 18005
some file can pass this check and other not, I remember 2 years ago I face this problem I take a basic AA file somewhere on the forum,
after that next file to update was fine.

Good day,
Laurent.

I don't understand that one, unless the method used, via SSH allows it, cause you where not on DD-WRT, that's a new one to me, in the future if you don't like to strip stock firmware get your reverts or files with no boot from this 2 links

I just read something that apparently I missed earlier. There is a line on the tl-wr740n openwrt support page, under the "Specific Install Notes" section, which says the following:

"The trunk WR740n hardware v1 image works unmodified and it can be flashed through the stock TP-Link web interface (another file exists for version 3). The v1 file was also successfully tested on hardware version 2.5."

Is this correct? But at the moment the trunk version is CC /if I am not mistaken/ and probably that line was written for earlier OpenWRT releases, perhaps AA or BB, or even earlier. So maybe the current trunk release isn't a good idea but BB might work? The support page last modification date is "2015/06/08 12:22" but that doesn't mean it was revised too.

@danymarc, your logic is something along the lines of this: "If DD-WRT has single image for both v1 and v2 hardware, then perhaps OpenWRT v1 image should also support v2 hardware". Am I following you?

@danymarc, I suppose the mtd utility doesn't care what data it writes to the non-volatile memory. And the dd-wrt revert image is actually already trimmed stock image, and that is why it just magically works.

That's correct, times ago I was playing with different firmware (openwrt, dd-wrt, custom) and I just remember this revert file save me a few times,
when you are like me not able to play with jtag and soldering you take the risk to brick this AP using mtd command
(if someone want to play with a bricked wr740 just PM me but I suspect transport price is over amazon value ^^ )

Good day,
Laurent.

I've decided to to give it a go and flashing with BB v1 image went flawlessly. In conclusion - tl-wr740n hw v2.5 is supported by Barrier Breaker V1 image.

Thank you everyone for all your thoughts and suggestions!

Could you install luci on this device with BBv1? Any problems so far?!

BB image don't install luci, I can install luci on BB but not with CC : no space left block the install with CC beta 1 and beta 2

Go back to BB, waiting final release.

@grau sorry, my bad, I did not read your post #11 correct.
you dont need to download Luci, cause LuCi its included in
Index of /barrier_breaker/14.07/ar71xx/generic/
http://downloads.openwrt.org/barrier_br … x/generic/

The discussion might have continued from here.
