I've manage to install OpenWrt on D-Link DAP-2590 (which is currently not on the list of the supported hardware).
While hardware is supported, there are several problems, that best addressed with kernel recompile. Is it counts as "supported device" and should I try to create new page for "table of hardware" list?
Not sure this is correct topic, so feel free to point me where to ask.
Since there seems to be no official OpenWrt firmware image available for download: Where can someone owning such a device download the necessary firmware image?
To get this device officially supported, you should consider submitting a patch that adds support.
I managed to get a non-uboot ramdisk kernel up on this using just the OEM firmware loaders.
I have a lot of junk to sort through to figure out which of various hacks were actually necessary.
1) cut/paste a bunch of code out of other archs to get a .factory to build. The currently supported Octeon systems run from USB so the Makefile code isn't there to do so.
2) use mkwrggimage (see ar71xxx Makefile) and then edit byte #0x48 from 0 to 1
3) hack out special load addresses from arch/mips/cavium-octeon/platform
4) If you're already bricked and using the emergency webserver, hold the button down the whole time from boot till it says to reboot. Use a machine screw just large enough to catch on the case hole... be very careful not to crush the button.
5) Squashfs will not work yet, mtd is broken. The OEM layout is as such:

The password is one of the first legible strings in one of the AP's software binaries from the "OSS" source code from D-LINK.
7) The faceplate comes off both the gray and black front/back plates; it may look lke only the grey one comes off at first but you do not have to get the faceplate off the PCB.
8) The wifi card is in a removable slot but there's a lot of glue keeping the antenna cables on their knobs. There seems to be a conspicuously TTL-serial-like pre-pinned connector with 3 pins, one empty, and one pin.
9) There's only eth0 and it is using the SOC drivers which will be automatically included when you select octeon. No sign of the Marvell chipset mentioned on wikidevi. An unpinned IDC on the corner.

Small kernel patching was required, but everything works: load from flash, squashfs, etc.
Initial install was done via rs232 console with tftp.
I can post patches here (against 4.4.0), if needed.
jsmith: I'd be interested in knowing anything you had to patch. I'm working with 4.9 but I should be able to port forward any patches. Thanks.
BTW, I don't know much about Octeon... should the kernel be finding multiple CPUs on this thing? (See the "fanout" line in the bootlog above.)
I've posted a compiling tree which will generate LEDE factory images for this model at
github (username "skids", repo "source", branch "dap2590") ... sorry, the forum won't
let me post links yet.
No guarantees it won't overheat or underperform, but no real problems so far in testing with a 5GHz client.
Don't expect the LEDs to behave sensibly.
