Topic: Help suggest router with most free space?

The content of this topic has been archived on 16 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Dear OpenWrt Community,

We have a project that's using a Raspberry-Pi3 configured as a router, but we're interested to switch to dedicated routing hardware running OpenWrt ... if only there is an available router that has enough disk space after flashing.

We need to run a Django website and some Python3 daemons to control iptables.  Could anyone suggest a product that would work?

The project has kids earn their internet access by completing activities.  It's a great way to supplement their educations.  OpenWrt forum won't let me post a link, but you are invited to join our google discussion group named "NetDispenser".

Thank you,
Charles

What is the max you are willing to pay per device?

One  goal is always to keep cost down, so "low as possible".  I'd say $100 max, or more if good reason.  I tried this several years ago with a Linksys 54GL (or S?).  That's what I know doesn't have enough space to run the extra stuff I want to run.  But such a device as that, but with more space, would be ideal.  I'm trying to avoid daisy-chaining the Pi off the main router by moving the whole credit-meter implementation up onto a proper, front-facing router.  Old re-purposed hardware would be an attractive option, consistent with the DIY context of the project.  It also seems like there are router manufacturers in Taiwan, iirc, who sell base units upon which you can add from a menu of options ... does that sound familiar?
Thanks!
Charles

Not sure if you can get it any more, but I have been quite happy with my Buffalo HP-AG300NH with 32 MB of flash, and 128 MB of memory. OpenWrt supports both 2.4 and 5ghz bands without issue.

I actually bought Netgear WNDR3700v4 for 31$ on ebay and it's great!

It has 128 MB Flash and 128 MB RAM
Official version does not support 128 MB flash but you can easily compile with changed space yourself and use all 128 MB flash. You can get more info about this in my topic here https://forum.lede-project.org/t/lede-o … ze/4130/28

For info:
I have set up openvpn server on this router.
Adblock
DDNS
DNScrypt
SQM scipts to fight with bufferbloat
transmission (to download torrents directly on my router)
NFS server (i have attached flash drive to USB port) and mounted on my laptop
Port knocking

This router is amazing for this price.

Thank you cvmiller,  I'm still reading but just responding before much time elapses.

You may want to look at the Gli products like this one <snip> ...
It indicates you can get it with up to 256MB and it has an internal sd card slot

Excellent links you gave there, those are beautiful little devices, beautifully priced, and I think they will work perfectly.  Thank you!!

It's also interesting to search "OpenWrt" on amazon ... there are several pages of products!

The discussion might have continued from here.
