Topic: Asus WL-500W

The content of this topic has been archived on 19 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I know that this fits under the larger question of "what kind of linux support with airgo chips have" which seems to be an interesting one. But the WL500W here looks like it might become the greatest hacking platform EVER, replacing all my WRT54GS routers I currently own.

Could this be added as "untested" to the TableOfHardware? And what can I do to help with the airgo problem?

To be "the greatest hacking platform EVER", it would need at least 64 MB RAM, and 300 MHz CPU.
Which I doubt it has.

Sounds like the ASUS WL-700gE though.

Yep. WL-700gE has a HDD, which not everyone might want to have (noise) and pay for.

I'm fairly confident that the WL500W doesn't have a hdd, because they advertise that you can have unattended bittorrent downloads etc by using an external USB harddrive.
It seems like a good thing to me. I just wish I could get some data on the box, I've emailed Asus but they haven't responded yet. As of now I have now clue what the specs are for it.

I checked FCC website if they have any photos of this device, but for all ASUS devices, there was only WL-500G premium (not counting phones, laptops, wireless cards etc.).

I also checked the GPL sources, and it has a mipsel CPU, although not sure how fast, and what mips precisely.
Firmware size is above 7 MB, so probably it has 8 MB flash.

So let's hope ASUS sends you some more specs, like CPU speed and RAM.

http://files.wl500g.info/asus/wl500w/img/

BCM5325 switch, BCM4321 radio on MiniPCI (WL-121W), VIA VT6212L USB2, two TTL serials. Board looks just like WL500gP so might be BCM4704 CPU, 8M flash and 32M ram.

Well doesn't the BCM4704 run (for most revisions) at 264MHz? But I'm hoping that's not what it has, because 32M ram isn't a lot to work with. But for the application I have in mind, it would be just fine.

mangoo, where did you get the gpl sources?

The link in the first post -> downloads -> somewhere there you have the sources.
I didn't actually look at the sources; only saw that there are mipsel cross-compilers there.

Hi, all.

Today I got wl-500w, and attached serial console to it.
Here's a boot log of original firmware.

One problem: Just after intalling and rebooting, All leds were keeping on lighting. This prevented ethernet port from linking. After "echo 0 > /proc/diag/led/power", ethernet ports linked and leds became normal. So I had to change /etc/diag.sh

root@OpenWrt:/# cat /etc/diag.sh
#!/bin/sh
# Copyright (C) 2006 OpenWrt.org

set_led() {
        local led="$1"
        local state="$2"
        [ -f "/proc/diag/led/$1" ] && echo "$state" > "/proc/diag/led/$1"
}

set_state() {
        case "$1" in
                preinit)
                        set_led dmz 1
                        set_led diag 1
                        set_led power 0
                ;;

At last, It's regretted to find that wireless module doesn't work as 802.11n draft mode.

root@OpenWrt:/# wl|grep nrate
abminrate
nrate   -r legacy rate (CCK, OFDM)-m mcs index-s stf mode (0=SISO,1=CDD,2=STBC(not supported),3=SDM)
root@OpenWrt:/# wl nrate
legacy rate 54 Mbps stf mode 0 auto
root@OpenWrt:/# wl nrate -m 0
wl: Not In Range
root@OpenWrt:/# wl nrate -m 1
wl: Not In Range
root@OpenWrt:/# wl nrate -m 2
wl: Not In Range
root@OpenWrt:/# wl nrate -m 3
wl: Not In Range
root@OpenWrt:/#

And my pcmcia draftN card(buffalo) also shows it works only 802.11g mode. It let me down....

Does anybody have any idea or indication to make it work as draft N mode?

Thank you.

Hello. I have wl 500w. How could install kamikaze or openwrt on it? Thanks.

I am just curious why in this OpenWRT comunity no body want to tell the other how to do the things.

Please people. I you did something and someone else asks how that was done, please help other do what already was done. This is the purpose of any forum.

Probably because OpenWrt kamikaze is (a) for developers only, not end-users; (b) not supported; (c) in a constant state of change; (d) liable to brick your router.

Notice also that the name of this forum is "Developers Only". Detailled instructions were posted above about how to modify Kamikaze work for this unit. If you're a developer those instructions will be sufficient. If they don't mean enough to you, then you shouldn't be trying Kamikaze.

I hope Kamikaze becomes stable (and recommended) soon, because at the moment OpenWrt is in no-man's-land: WhiteRussian will get no further development, and yet Kamikaze is not recommended for use. But in the mean time, it has been said over and over again: do NOT use Kamikaze unless you know what you're doing, and you know how to unbrick your router.

There is an interesting story about the WL-500W at http://www.golem.de/0703/50822.html (sorry this is only german).

I'll try to translate:

If the WL-500W and two other Asus-products cannot be adapted to the final 802.11n standard via software, then Asus will exchange the devices for free. :-)

Hi all,
I've tested different firms on the 500W... And now when I installed openwrt I seem to get dome kind memoy mapping problem:

Creating 5 MTD partitions on "Physically mapped flash":
0x00000000-0x00040000 : "cfe"
0x00040000-0x007f0000 : "linux"
0x000be400-0x001c0000 : "rootfs"
mtd: partition "rootfs" doesn't start on an erase block boundary -- force read-only
0x007f0000-0x00800000 : "nvram"
0x001c0000-0x007f0000 : "OpenWrt"

-What's wrong, and how do I correct the mapping ?
Thanks, Mikael

What are the chances of running 2.6 kernel/openwrt-brcm47xx-2.6 on Asus WL500W?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, mr007.

O.K. I've installed this
http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … uashfs.trx
in my wl500w.
It works good, except for wireless.

Hi yapoo,
This is great news. Thanks for the update and pointer.

I tried to install the .trx you suggested, however I'm getting garbage on the console.
Are the serial console parameters different than those of the CFE bootloader (115200 8N1)?
Would it be too much to ask you for the output of your "nvram show | sort" ?

Also - I understand it was compiled from the May 1 version of kamikaze or did you have additional patches?
Which profile was used (Atheros Wi-Fi, No Wi-Fi, Netgear WGT634U)?
Please let me know exactly which revision did you use and send/post the extra patches, if there are any.

Thanks a lot,
007

Hi, 007.
I'm sorry to be late.

I got the snapshot from download on openwrt site and installed as it is. No patches.
As to profile, maybe "Atheros Wi-Fi".

I wish this would help you.

Shall we move to other forum, "General Discussion" or "General Discussion(Kamikaze)"?
This kind of topic would be unfit for "Developers Only"......

Thanks a lot, zukky.
If you got administrative rights - feel free to move this the General (kamikaze).

Unfortunately, despite taking the very same steps and changing the console parameters accordingly (14400 8N1 - minicom and setserial) to match yours, I was not able to get a meaningful run of the 2.6 kernel on WL500W.
I keep getting the same garbaged output.
Spent a lot of time on this yesterday and today (thus the delayed reply), but no luck at this point.

I really need the 2.6 on WL500W and this is driving me nuts.

Thanks for the help,
007

I´d like to ask you whether it´s possible to use Wlan as an ISP or not. That´s why I´m looking for another firmware. (WL 500W)

The discussion might have continued from here.
