Hi Folks, I'm new here and I have a dummies question so please forgive me.

I've been through the list of Supported Routers found on the wiki link and found OpenWrt supports the following TP-Link models, close to mine:-

39 - TD-W8970
49 - TD-W8960N
72 - TD-W8968

But I can't find my TD-W8980 and wondered if there is a way to improve mine like these others have been with OpenWrt?

Regards

Steve

It should be supported in LEDE 17.01.4, except for the 5 GHz wlan (and there's little to no chance for changes there). See https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/td-w8980 for the installation procedure and further details.

Thanks for the speedy response here slh..

Does this mean that if I go ahead and (figure out how to) setup OpenWrt on my TD-8980 router, the 5Ghz wifi will no longer work and I'm stuck with the 2.4Ghz wifi only?

Cheers
Steve

Basically, yes.

The 2.4 GHz wlan card is based on QCA ath9k, which has good/ free drivers for OpenWrt.

The 5 GHz wlan card however is a lantiq XWAVE300 variant, which is not supported in OpenWrt (you'll find some threads about it in this forum, showing that it's a pain at best).
