Here's what I'm having problems with:

It looks like the tar file I'm using is no good. Should there be an alternative bin file? Or what else would you suggest?

Use the firmware from Gargoyle router web site. It is Openwrt underneath anyway, so you have nothing to lose 
Thanks. I figured it out though and managed to upgrade to the latest version of LEDE.
