Topic: Options with OpenWRT

The content of this topic has been archived on 15 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I always used firmwares from Oleg on my Asus WL-500g, they are good, have many options, are (almost) always stable and deliver a good performance.

Until I discovered OpenWRT, I want to try the latest firmware and see what is possible and what not and how it performs on my WL-500g.

But before I am going to try it I have a few questions about the options of OpenWRT.

Does OpenWRT have things like:

- URL Filter
- Samba
- usb stick/webcam modus (for the USB port)

Molski

Not webcam... If you haven't tried OpenWRT, you should start off with WhiteRussian RC6:

Here is a good starting guide for what you can install:

URL Filter and Samba should go OK, the same with USB. But I haven't heard of any webcam-solution. Not that I should know anyway.

Remember to install the package "nas" if you want WPA to work...

I got a webcam working with the Philips pwc/pwcx driver and an Asus WL500g: see forum thread http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=3682

But performance was miserable. Do yourself a favour and buy a cheap ethernet-attached webcam instead. (The Edimax is very cheap - although I've not tried it - or Panasonic have some low-end ones too)

Then you can point it at something like zoneminder running on a PC, and the low-speed MIPS CPU in the Asus only has to forward the IP packets back and forth smile

The discussion might have continued from here.
