I got openwrt installed an running on my Simpleshare using the firmware at

The only problem is I can't get the harddrive in the simpleshare to show up.  There are no ide devices.  I have added the ide packages and followed the IdeStorageHowTo.  But I am not sure how to configure /etc/modules and nothing shows up in /proc/partitions
Do I need to format the harddrive since it has the reiser fs or do I need to configure a driver for the ide controller.
I feel like I am getting there and that this would be a great machine for openwrt.  I will publish a how to for others if I finally get this.
Any help would be appreciated.

An update. 
I got the suggestion to try Kamikaze with the Asus WL-700gE settings at http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=41106#p41106

I have tried a couple of different configs for makes and flashes, but still no luck.  I can't even get a kamikaze firmware to boot.  Has anyone had any success with this?

I can load this without problems and it runs fine.
However, the hard drive is usually not recognized. It only shows up in dmesg once in a blue moon. The original firmware does not have this problem.
I am thinking that some gpio might need to be set correctly.

Any hints on how to proceed would be appreciated.

I have got mine working with samba and and swap file on the hard drive.
I still have not got the print server running or the web server, but once I get a little more time I am sure I can get that too.
I have not had problems recognizing the drive.  What size do you have?  I have 160GB and mrtropicguy has 250.  Both seem to be working fine.

Thank you for your answer. I found the openmss thread before. As I said, I can install mrtropicguy's image without problems. However, the hard drive is almost never mounted. Since I have presumably the same image as you installed, it may be a hardware problem on my side. I do get some jffs errors in dmesg (something like missing magic byte). Do you observe such errors in your case or do I have a bad flash chip? I have not been able to contact mrtropicguy and I was wondering if the image from his website might be corrupted. Could you forward the actual image you are using to me?
Do you know what actually happens when the drive is mounted? It looks like the driver for the ide chip is loaded (from dmesg). The drive itself seems to be OK, since it works fine with the orignial firmware and also outside the box connected to a computer. I also tried a different drive with the same problems.

Just a little clarification. I was confusing mounting and recognizing. At that one time when the drive was recognized I was able to format and mount it properly following the instructions given by mrtropicguy. But it does not show up in dmesg most of the time. Is there anything magic about the MBR of the disk? The first time around I used fdisk from openwrt but in response to my problems I removed the disk and reformated it with gparted using primary partitions and a DOS MBR. I think both formating operations should be fine.

Can you post the output of dmesg?  Also,  can you post the output of nvram show.  I use some info stored in the nvram to determine what type of hardware is being used.  Maybe your hardware isn't getting identified properly.

I have a new patch I need to submit for SimpleShare detection in OpenWRT.  Basically, I am truncating the number of digits checked in the boardnum to 4 (04FN).  You can change this in the kamikaze/trunk/package/broadcom-diag/src/diag.c file.  I'll try to get a new file posted on the website and let everyone know.  Maybe that will fix the detection problems for more people.

Installed my 250gb simpleshare with mrtropicguy's firmware. The thing boots up, I can telnet and ssh to it, but have exactly the same problem that ide drive is not recognised. Moreover, I cannot get to atftp reflashing to work (tried both under linux and windows) - no success. Tried setting bootwait in NVRAM and every possible instruction I could find on the net - but no success. Does anyone have an idea how to get this solved. Can you reflash from the currently installed openwrt firmware?

Congrats for all the great work done here! Want to turn my simpleshare in an upnp server - looking forward to having 250gb of music served to these 35usd little thingies all over the house!
