Topic: WRT54G V6 - unable to set initial password

The content of this topic has been archived on 25 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I did a base firmware install using "openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx" and following the directions off the web site for a V6 router.  OpenWRT starts up just fine in a vanilla config, wifi works fine, switch works fine, all is good.

Can't be configured though.  Trying to set the password causes the window (telnet or http) to simply lock up, not coming back with errors or anything.  Power-cycle basically resets the scenario.

I tried safe-mode and doing a "mount_root" which comes back with an error.

Any tips for where to go with it appreciated.  Different version of the firmware?  Simple setting I'm just missing?

Mike

Which version of the firmware are you using?  The v6 is considered junk by most people because it only has 2MB of flash, and as such can only hold the micro version of OpenWrt White Russian.  Even then, space is quite limited.

default.  that might be the problem.  I'll get the micro on there and then post results.  All the box is going to function as is a bridge, so I'm not overly concerned about the flexibility of it...thanks for the pointer though.  I'll avoid it in the future.

If you were using the default version, then here is what happened:
The OpenWrt images contain the kernel and squashfs partitions; when you reboot after flashing the image, the jffs2 partition (the writable partition) is created, containing all remaining flash space.  Since you flashed the default image, there wasn't enough room left to create a usable jffs2 partition, so as a result you can't set a password, or do anything else that performs a write operation.

I'm having the same trouble as mjsmith. and i flashed the micro image. i have a wrt54g v6. what do i do? all i did was change the mac address from nvram. that seems to have worked. any ideas? thanks

I am haveing the same issue.... My router might as well be a brick ... How is the fixed?

Just installed the latest whiterussian openwrt-wrtsl54gs-squashfs.bin (default) on my newly purchased wrtsl54gs and am getting the exact same problem....I try to set it via the web interface or telnet and I get the same results...just sits at "reenter password" and never sets a new password.  I updated my firmware using the web interface...am going to try and reinstall the image via tftp and see if it helps....any hints on a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Generally: only routers with >= 4MB flash and 16MB RAM are supported by OpenWrt...

ummm....I'm really new to all of this but I am positive my router supports Openwrt (I realize the older versions only support the micro images). http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Har … /WRTSL54GS. My router has 8mb flash and 32mb RAM, and says it is supported by whiterussian (other users have reported getting it to work with kamikaze also). Any ideas?

Edit* I guess I'm just an idiot, ran 'firstboot', powercycled and now I can change my password
