Topic: Netgear WNR2000 OpenWRT (Atheros AP81, AR9103 chip, u-boot)

The content of this topic has been archived between 3 Apr 2018 and 3 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

To get back to the factory firmware, you could check prentek's post (#190) on page 8.  He used information from radengr's post on page 6.

PS - I think the uboot recovery environment has a default IP of 192.168.1.10 and it tries to fetch firmware from 192.168.1.27.

THANKS

Sorry it didn't work out for you but that's been the correct method since the original development period (see post #148 on page 6, posted by the one of the main contributors in making openwrt possible for wnr2000).  It served me very well for the past couple years, and I continue to use the same method at least several times a month as I frequently make trunk builds for WNR2000.

Has anyone given Barrier Breaker a shot on the v4 or v5 model? Interested in getting it.

Wikidevi is already listing a v5 model with QCA SoC, OpenWrt wiki doesn't have it yet. Doesn't look like it came to market yet.

Then reboot the router, tftp flash a copy of an official firmware from Netgear, and follow the instructions above. Enjoy, and thanks again to fuhry for patching uboot!

Thanks I have manage to unbrick my wnr2000 v1 by this instruction,

Actions

Setup your ethernet network adapter with a static ip. My configuration is:

IP: 192.168.1.10
netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1

Connect your network adapter and router with the ethernet cable (I have used router's port no.1).

Then power off the router and power on while pushing the reset button. Power led started to blink and i was able to ping again.

I have put orginal software:

tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT WNR2000-V1.2.3.7.img

download from ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNR2000-V1.2.3.7.img

!!ATTENTION!!. At this time, your job is finished. Please at this time be patient, because your router is still working for you, as it is writing the firmware you have send to the flash. WAIT patiently, don't ping, don't try to access web interface or something similar. Router will REVIVE on its own! You can begin tweaking the router when power led stops blinking and stays permanently lit up.

That it, it is operational again!

Hi,
Maybe I'm an idiot but I have a hard time following these instructions - I can get the router to start blinking the power light, but I cannot upload the factory firmware, simply because it won't let me (permissions) - I can't log in as any user other than anonymous, but with that one I get:

ftp> put WNR2000-v1.2.3.7.img
local: WNR2000-v1.2.3.7.img remote: WNR2000-v1.2.3.7.img
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||50320|)
553 WNR2000-v.1.2.3.7.img: Permission denied
ftp>

My issue is that I uploaded the files via telnet initially, but after the reboot I am unable to ssh/telnet into the router anymore - green power is on and whatever port I connect cable to... any ideas? (WNR2000v1)

Are you really trying to use FTP or is that a typo?

You should be using a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) client, not an FTP one. Like in the instructions you quoted smile.

Hello,

First post for me.

I recommended a wnr2000v3 to a family member a few months back since it was a front-pager on SlickDeals for like $12. I just got around to setting in up and saw it was a refurb and only had a month warranty (too late now!)

Anyway, I had a lot of problems with it dropping wireless completely and requiring reboots every 2 minutes. I tried the 30/30/30 on it and that made it even worse - now it won't even accept pings. I'm pretty sure the firmware is fried.

If I power on normally OR while holding reset, all lights come on for about a second before they all go out. Then, only the LAN lights flash for whichever ports have something plugged in (power light doesn't even stay on - not orange, not green, nothing.)

I opened it up and connected to the TTL serial pins and I get the following:

U-Boot 1.1.4-g98735ae5 (Mar 24 2011 - 15:19:45)

Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks!

I have a WNR2000v1 that I just flashed to Backfire 10.03.1.  Can I move to a more current version of OpenWRT?  If so, is there a specific procedure I need to follow?

Thanks!

I have my WNR2000v1 upgraded to 8MB Flash and running BB14.07 now.

The procedure is not simple but not that complicated if you are able to work with hardware.  Moderate to expert soldering and de-soldering skill is essential.

You will need a serial console and a SPI chip programmer (I used a Bus Pirate 3 with flashrom, which works but is very slow), and an 8 MB SPI flash chip (I used a M25P64).

Boot up stock firmware with the serial console and extract your ART (described by others in this thread).  You should have a 65536 byte binary file.  Most of it is empty but you can tell it is a real ART by finding your factory MAC address in it.

Using a hex editor, dd, etc. assemble an image of the complete new chip:
Offset   Binary file
0x000000 -- Fuhry's modified u-Boot
( about 90kB empty space)
0x050000 -- http://downloads.openwrt.org/barrier_br … pgrade.bin
0x7f0000 -- your ART
Write this file to the new 8 MB chip with your SPI programmer.

Replace the original flash chip with this chip.

Note:  You can save a lot of soldering and make for an easy reversion to stock by just lifting pin 7 (CS) of the old chip off of the board, and jumper it to pin 1(3.3V) so the old 4 MB chip is permanently inactive.  Piggyback the new chip on top of the old one and hook up pins 1,2,8,9,10,15,and 16.  The chip manufacturer says not to connect anything to the center 4 pins on each side and you should respect that.  Run a lead from pin 7 of the new chip past pin 7 of the old chip to the pin 7 pad on the board.
[ A variation on this would involve a switch on the CS line so you can boot the original chip, then (since the bootloader copies itself and runs from RAM) throw the switch and write the new chip.  This would potentially eliminate the need for an external programmer.  If I ever have to do this again, I will try it. ]

With new chip installed, connect serial console, boot up and interrupt the boot at the bootloader stage.

Note 1:  The Fuhy bootloader is hard-coded for a 4 MB chip.  It will say you have 4 MB flash, ignore that.  It can still erase and write the first 4 MB of your 8 MB chip though.
Note 2:  If you want to use Ethernet under the bootloader you will need to erase block 3F and reboot so it puts a default MAC address to the Ethernet port instead of 0:0:0:0:0:0.  You should not need to do this here though.  Erasing block 3F will trash the firmware you programmed in.

In the bootloader:
setenv bootcmd bootm 0xbf550000
saveenv

I think this is all you need.  The OpenWrt kernel mostly ignores the boot command line.  You may need root=31,2 if it can't mount root.

Reboot.  You now have OpenWrt BB with about 2.8 MB of free space.

Ethernet works (WAN and LAN), wifi works, LED's do not work (other than the 4 LAN LEDs that are driven directly from the switch chip)

You can replace the firmware as usual with 'mtd write <file> firmware'

To debrick this modified router, boot up to serial console, erase block 3F so you have Ethernet as described above,  and tftp an initramfs Openwrt and boot from RAM.
(Your tftp server: 192.168.1.27.  Router IP 192.168.1.10.  These are in printenv / setenv / saveenv)
tftpboot 0x8100000 <file>
bootm 0x8100000

A RAM-based OpenWrt will come up.  scp a good firmware and mtd it. The reason you need to do this is because the bootloader can't write beyond 4 MB, but the OpenWRT mtd can.

Thanks again to the OpenWRT team and fuhry for making this possible.

mk24,
I plan to upgrade my WNR2000V1 to 8M flash/64 ram with a SPI programmer, could you please send me your image file(jinyhsz@hotmail.com) so that I can make sure there is no mistake in the .bin file.
Before that i have two questions:
why do you use the generic-ap81.bin? is it possible to use another router's fw such as planex's mzk-w04nu: with almost same configuration as wnr2000v1 and 8m flash by default, also there is no 4m/8m problem in it's u-boot?
Can openwrt detect whole 64m RAM area immediately if i replace the DDR ram without any modification by your instruction?
Thanks for your work!

I did not try to expand the RAM.  My unit is still the stock 32 MB of RAM.

I just tried the mzk-w04nu image, thanks for the tip.  it does work but I'm not seeing much difference from generic-AP81.  There are advantages-- the smaller file can be flashed direct thru the 4M bootloader, and there is no dead space after the kernel.  But the LEDs still aren't right.  To use mzk-w04nu you need to set bootcmd bootm 0xbf050000, i.e. the start of the image in flash.

Neither one has switch configuration working.  I thought this model supports hardware VLANs.

It is simple to make an image for the chip.  There are 3 parts: bootloader, firmware, and ART.
First use dd to pad the bootloader out to exactly 320 K (327,680 bytes).  (This will leave a blank bootenv partition which you will need to fix up with the bootloader under serial control.)

dd if=u-boot.bin of=u-boot.bin.pad ibs=320K conv=sync
0+1 records in
640+0 records out
327680 bytes (328 kB) copied, 0.00323579 s, 101 MB/s

Do the same thing with the firmware, using 7808K for the size.  Your ART should already be exactly 64K (65536 bytes).  Then use cat to combine the three into one big file for your programmer:

cat u-boot.bin.pad fw.bin.pad ART.orig.bin > chipimage.bin

The resulting image should be exactly 8388608 bytes, which is the size of the 8MB chip.

mk24,
Thanks for answer!
I notice the stock partition in mzk-w04nu is little different that it reserves 128k for ART partition, so the mzk-w04nu fw in your wnr2000 is able to read information from its 64k partition address?

Interesting.  That doesn't seem to cause a problem other than 64kB of wasted space.  The ART still loads and sets the MAC address and wifi parameters correctly.   Maybe with some 'wrong' data in the extra space it might not work.  Right now I have ended up with all 0xFF's in the extra block, but if you follow the process for padding the firmware with dd you would have all 00's there.

If that turns out to be a problem you could run the generic-ap51 once and erase the firmware partition, since that extra block is part of the firmware partition under that firmware.  Then write the w04nu firmware.

Bump. Any love for my question in #201?

https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 46#p255346

I really don't want to trash this guy. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Will the SPI programming procedure work with my current chip? I'm still not able to extract the "ART" though with the unit in its current state..

Thanks for support on this. Can someone please provide some information on how to update from 10.03.1 to 14.07?

Thank you!

Like I said in post 285, you can get most functionality working by using the serial console to change the boot entry point, and then flash the 14.07 generic-ap81-squashfs.  This should work on 4 MB chips as well.  You will have a flat space with maximum room in the filesystem, but the LEDs and switch configuration apparently do not work.

Hey mk24,

Is this a suitable cable for serial console to this router: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-to-TTL-Seri … 809610323?

I have [partially] bricked my router following unsanctioned instructions and am hoping I can fix it with a serial connection.

Yes that cable should work.  Watch out for fake FTDI chips if you use Windows.

Hi
I have a WN2000RPT v1
I tried to get telnet working, but this seems not to work with the rpt version.
With a serial cable I installed openwrt just to find out that client bridge is not working.
so I have a bridge that can not bridge sad
In addition I was too lazy to backup the original uboot....

Is there a way to get the stock firmware back on without the uboot backup?
or better... can I get the bridge working somehow?

If nothing at all with the wifi works, you may have corrupted the ART partition.

The modified U-Boot is compatible with stock firmware.  The only difference is that it does not checksum the firmware, so that it does not halt upon finding unofficial firmware.

Hi

In openwrt, wireless worked.
Now I have reverted to the stock firmware and wireless is not working anymore.
I tried factory reset and reflashing the stock firmware using tftp and the firmware update tool from the web interface.

in the bootlog I have many

New Trunk builds of OpenWrt no longer fit on the WNR2000v1.  Flashing the uImage (openwrt-ar71xx-generic-uImage-lzma.bin) results in "Failed to erase block".

This is probably due to kernel bloat as they recently switched from the 3.14 kernel to the 3.18 kernel.

If anyone has any ideas of how to get around this, please share.

Hi.
I've put an wnr2000v1 at my parents house with backfire, and it's been running well for a couple of years. I just swapped in a new AC router, so I took back the wnr2000 and played with it a bit, and managed to brick it. TFTP'ed the original netgear image and then followed the steps to once again install backfire.

Then I thought I may as well upgrade to Barrier Breaker, and since noone has posted an image, I made one myself including the packages luci + dnsmasq (but only for ipv4) + luci-proto-relay + relayd (2 last packages is to be able to use it as a wireless bridge).  Just remember you need to flash back to the original firmware first. I didn't manage to go directly from backfire.

Just do the following with the original firmware: (it's the same as before, just to be sure I'll repeat it)
cd /tmp & Snarf the required 3 files and flash the partitions. (don't need to reflash uboot) That is:

mtd -e mtd1 write ubootenv-stockpartitions.img mtd1
mtd -e mtd2 write openwrt-ar71xx-ap81-rootfs-squashfs.bin mtd2
mtd -e mtd4 write openwrt-ar71xx-uImage-lzma.bin mtd4

It works great and I have 232KB free.

I've experimented a little and came to the conclusion that Attitude Adjustment is best suited for the WNR2000v1. With BB there is so too little space to include the "normal" packages.

With AA I can include dnsmasq-dhcpv6 and all the Ip6 modules, qos, freifunk-p2pblock, relayd, miniupnp, + Luci with bootstrap theme and Luci apps for upnp,p2pblock,firewall,qos. All without repartioning or some other advanced stuff. Should be good for  99% of all normal users. Looking forward to the "final" .1 interim release of AA.

Has anybody tftp'ed the trunk  "openwrt-ar71xx-generic-wnr2000v3-squashfs-factory.img" onto  WNR2000v3 yet? I am very tempted to put dd-wrt on it but scared that it's a one way process.

I tried  to tftp using Jounin and 3Com TFTP server but all it says was successful and the "green" led never stop blinking (flashing). It appears the firmware is not getting written to the flash.

TIA..
Tik
