Also, the forum is squashing the big one to fit in the tables, the text -is- smoother. (View it by itself if you want to see it in all its glory.)

Nice.
(Is that the grand theft auto font?)
Not that I'm aware. It's a freeware font called "wide awake" that I deslanted and kerned.
That font looks more like a helvetica variant. The main difference is that the font I've used has no curved lines.
Why? You want me to use that font? This is listed as the closest freeware variant.

hi all,
Just my little contribution for the logo !
just for tell, in green, it's like the signal's force.

U can tell all that u want on that ![]()
OK, I've been collaborating with Kaloz on IRC, and here's what we've come up with.
Thanks, andy, for the pipe wrench.

I like the openbox idea, but the perspective on the flaps doesn't seem right. Here's my suggestion to fix the flaps (I'm no artist, so this piece of junk was whipped together in PowerPoint..). Regarding the idea, I think the box-logo is really good, as people often refer to their routers as boxes (the openness of the box is self-evident)..
you are right, but adding all the flaps to the box will make it more difficult to read, our goal (with my great friend and admired college RockyGryphon) is to keep it simple and in bloodhood with the great ascii logo that receive us after every and each login to our box.
the logo can be tweaked more, but since it doesnt seem to be the kind of thing the developers want, i will leave it there til i understand more their wishes..

We have no exact idea at all. DiveFox just asked me, what could be done to make his logo better, and I've suggested him some modifications, that's all
To be honest, I like most of the logos, but I didn't feel that "YEAH? THAT'S THE ONE!" ![]()

yea, i understand but first what for one is "YEAH? THAT'S THE ONE!" is generally not for the other..thats why some guidelines could be useful. but so far its been fun. specially RG proposals, im about ro begin a fan club. )
i dont seem to find your suggestions to DiveFox logo, could you post them here plis.

No, just remarking on the similarity.

He liked the wrench idea, but the first image was made with a photo. Basically I suggested him to use a line art of a wrench only, in a bigger size and place the text in the center
That's all.
We were on IRC discussing it in PM. You should have seen what I wanted to post. It had a photorealistic pipe wrench, and after that an arm turning a pipe wrench on a pipe, and then I stole Andy's wrench. Kaloz was mainly just saying stuff like "move it to the center" and "uhuh, that looks less shitty there". ![]()
If I had my druthers, I'd have "set boot_wait on first stupid" in the background.
Here's my take on the issue. Only a few of these submissions are actually "logos" as opposed to "banners". A logo should be bold, simply colored (for two-color printing on shirts and such), and it should stand apart from any background color or text (beyond the name, the font of which is usually VERRRY carefully chosen).
I do agree that we need more to go on. You say you're looking for a "yeah! that's the one!" feeling. All right, then--well, since you're making the decision, you kinda know what will strike you that way. You may not know, for instance, that you want it to be a pair of scissors or a pipe wrench or whatever, but you DO know what you want it to symbolize, what you want it to stand for.
Logos are exremely important, and if I were consulting you as a graphic designer, the FIRST thing I would ask would be: "What do you want your logo to say? The next thing I would ask would be: "What kind of feeling do you want to portray?"
Finally, I would ask you to show me some logos that you REALLY like, that really speak to you, and we would take it from there.
So...
Thoughts?
While you're mulling that over, here's a sketch. Yeah, yeah, I know a lot of people don't like the little waves, but I think it's simple and abstract enough to be good in this sketch.

Exactly right.

I've purposely avoided saying things like "I like this logo" or "could you add this .." because I want to see what ideas people come up with on their own. I don't want everyone trying to draw the exact same logo. As such, I can't provide any samples of what I think are good logos.
Anyways, some points that I want to make -
- As andy pointed out, this is a logo and we'd like to be able to use it in print (papers/manuals and tshirts) so the colors need to be kept to a minimum. To simplify things, I'm going to say right now "logos need to be 4 colors or less, not including the background color".
- Do not submit logos showing pixelization. Learn how to use vector art or anti aliasing. Should your logo win, you are expected to be able to produce either vector art (eg: postscript) or a high resoultion image (high enough resolution that it can be printed on the front/back of a tshirt without being pixelized).
- I know this is linux and it's wireless, but the radio waves and tux clipart are over used. If you're going to use some sort of radio waves do it in a style other than the ")))" cliche. Also - and I can't stress this enough - no pictures or represenations of the Linksys WRT54G in the logo.
- The logo should fall into one of two categories: either completely meaningless or a represenation of what you think openwrt is/means/does. A meaningless logo would be stylized leters and/or an abstract logo. A meaningful logo would be some representation of "open" "wireless" "freedom" or "multi functional" (whatever words you think apply to openwrt) in the form of a logo. The only text allowed on the logo is "OpenWrt" and "Wireless Freedom" (I really don't care if you upercase them).
- Keep the logo simple; you do not need to fill the entire area.
...
Who know, there may be a prize ![]()
The entries that I've liked (in no particular order) -
josephus, framer99, johnk, andy
alej00d & RockyGryphon: The box on the O just isn't working; although I do like the way you've tried to match the existing ascii banner.
I've purposely avoided saying things like "I like this logo" or "could you add this .." because I want to see what ideas people come up with on their own. I don't want everyone trying to draw the exact same logo. As such, I can't provide any samples of what I think are good logos.
By "show me a logo you like", I was referring to logos for other companies or products that you really respect, and convey a style similar to what you want.
A couple more:

The dots for waves is interesting .. what if you do that from the O instead of an antenna sticking out of it?
(I can't say I really care for the font)

Well, in it's current iteration, that would break it. In order to have the sensation of them emenating from something, they should really be horizontally aligned, but then they're behind the text. I'll remove the antenna and see what I can come up with.
(I can't say I really care for the font)
Good, that helps me out. I'll try something a little more professional.

I was thinking something along the lines of

(o)penWrt

.Anyways, don't abandon your other idea, I liked the wrench
don't abandon your other idea...
I prefer to think of it as "submitted" rather than abandoned. Barring further input/criticism, I'm done with the wrench.
okay, one more, then I'm going home. I'll change the font later and see what everyone thinks.

so after have read recommandation of mbm, my logo purpose is in the way, isn't it ?!!!
but i mean mbm don't like more of that mine
!!!
U can see it again on this adress
