Topic: Linksys WRT1900ACS: which image?

The content of this topic has been archived between 30 Mar 2018 and 30 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hello to everyone,

I just bought this router because of its specs and because it was adsvertised as "open source".
then I got the bad surprise that there is not an official stable image image for it...am I wrong?

I want to be 100% sure not to brick my router for a wrong image...
I read the wiki on https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/linksys/wrt1900acs

is it safer the latest snapshot:

https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots … u/generic/

or the latest kaloz image:

https://downloads.openwrt.org/people/kaloz/

please if someone out there is happy with some image on this specific router let me know.

thaks in advance

If you have the 1900acs, then you want to install "shelby" image.
If you have version 1 (v1) then install "mamba" image.
If you have version 2 (v2) then install "cobra" image.

I'm not sure if trunk now includes the "nand" patch or not, but if you have problems rebooting, just post to the 1900ac forum, and I'll send you to a link for a image that does include the nand patch.

Actually, I have found trunk to be very stable, and haven't heard of anyone's router crashing. However! I always have to make the statement that your experience may differ. However, with good communication with this forum a lot of newbie issues can be resolved fairly quickly.

Best Regards,

David

P.S. If you haven't done ANY research about OpenWrt, and you install trunk, you're not going to get a web front end. You have to SSH and install LuCi (#opkg update ; opkg install luci)  << example to get a web front end.

If you don't know anything about ssh or Linux, I recommend you do a lot of reading first.

It doesn't appear that Kaloz images have been updated since the 27th of November -- Recommend for the latest updates (New wifi drivers etcl) that you go with trunk.

**EDIT**

You are welcome to install my image build (David's) which does include the latest wifi drivers and nand patch for acs.  The kernel is 4.1.13.

Hi David,

I thank you a lot for your complete answer! the power of open source :-)

I am an IT professional, so I know about Linux, ssh, etc... but it is the first time I deal with "open" routers and I dont want to brick it.
I confirm that I have the ACS version, so finally you recomend the trunc or yours...
I see a new trunc dated 31st of dec, maybe they include the patch and the wifi driver?

another rquestion: if the router doesnt start after a flash, am I obliged to buy the TTL USB cable? or I can re-flash with some procedure?
I read about some procedure for the 1900ac, dont know if it works with acs too.

anyway...thanks again for having spent some time to answer me!
cheers

Don't think trunk has nand patch(have not seen patch set some through), but does have latest mwlwifi.
You may want to try this r48014-2 build:
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 30#p305630
kernel 4.1/nand patch/latest mwlwifi
Tried yesterday on a v1 and all seems fine.

If an image fails, you can cycle the power 3 times to your last good image, but cable is sometimes necessary. Info is on the wiki.

If trunk doesn't have the nand patch yet, then I definitely don't recommend it. The reason being is as soon as you go to boot, it's likely to revert to the Linksys Stock firmware after 3 failed boots.

EDIT -- BTW -- The risk of bricking is pretty low. Fortunately the 1900ac(s)/v1/v2 have a secondary flash system. So, if you blow it up somehow, there's a procedure to recover.

Let me know if you have further questions.

got it. thanks.

I will try the David's one or the r48014-2 build

the trunk is with which kernel?

PS: I found the procedure:

1. Assuming the router is on, turn it off.
2. Turn it back on... the power light will illuminate and then go out briefly as it prepares to boot. As soon as it goes out, turn it off again. Repeat this step three times, leaving the router on after the third time you turn it off.
3. Let it boot. It should return to stock after you let it boot.

I think they're using 4.1.??. Be sure to understand the no luci aspect if you go with trunk.

Currently trunk is on 4.1.13.

These are the recovery instructions off the wiki.

"Backup Firmware Recovery

contributed by edgeman
Manually switch the WRT1900ac from a trashed flash to the secondary [backup] flash:

    Reset router by pressing reset button until PWR light starts to flash {should take ~ 15 seconds}
Once Power LED stops flashing, power off router with power switch
Turn power back on and Power LED will light.
As soon as any other LED turns on, power off router with power switch
Turn power back on and Power LED will light.
As soon as any other LED turns on, power off router with power switch
Turn power back on and Power LED will light.
As soon as any other LED turns on, power off router with power switch
Turn power back on and Power LED will light.
Let router power up completely; it should now be on the alternate firmware "

Hi david, are your build include Luci? i want instal openwrt to my wrt1900acs because have problems with my wifi 2.4 ghz. cant connect to wifi 2.4 ghz or when connect didn't have internet on the last stock software. but all fine when connect wifi 5 ghz or lan.

(Last edited by IceTi on 3 Jan 2016, 13:26)

It does include Luci, so feel free to use it.

David's version is just like the trunk, the lamp works properly in trunk goes right exists only led SATA and power. And has LUCI installed.
But unfortunately needle 5GHz WiFi problem is the same. After 3 to 4 hours of operation download speed drops to 15 mbps.

Personally I appreciate your work David. Any idea how we can solve the problem of wifi?

Which version of trunk are you on, and with which version of wifi driver?

So far I have myself (v1) and 2 other people (acs) running the trunk snapshot compiled from a week ago, and it's been rock solid with stability.  I have uptime of 7 days, and have performed speedtests on Android and Iphones, and they are all getting great speeds (No drop-offs).

root@OpenWrt:/mnt/usb# uptime
11:59:06 up 7 days,  2:51,  load average: 0.05, 0.07, 0.06

root@OpenWrt:/mnt/usb# uname -a
Linux OpenWrt 4.1.13 #1 SMP Sun Dec 27 00:20:23 CST 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

DESIGNATED DRIVER (Bleeding Edge, r48005)

However, any specific wifi issues you should submit to Kaloz as he's the one working on the driver for 1900ac  >  https://github.com/kaloz/mwlwifi/issues

firmware you've compiled yourself. having solved the problem of light, and that I hoped you settled and wifi.

This :
http://personalpages.tds.net/~davidc502/mvebu/

And 02-Jan-2016 trunk + Luci same problem after 3-4 hours wifi is very slow download.
But the upload is not affected.
I like your version than having some issues rectified.

Keep in mind, what's posted on my site is for "Shelby" or ACS. Don't flash that image if you are on a different piece of hardware.

Also, the Trunk snapshot included .15 wifi, and I made no changes to source. With more people using the image, it might come out that others have the same problem as you. There just haven't been enough people who have flashed this image to give good feedback.

Hope that helps.

**EDIT** All I know is that its been rock solid for me, and I'm not chasing kernels, so I plan to stay on this snapshot for quite some time.

If you would like, I can post the v1 (Mamba) or v2 (Cobra), to the site so you can download. Unless you have ACS (Shelby) hardware, in which you can download and install whats on the site already.

yes mi router is wrt1900acs

My question is: ac WiFi 5GHz. which greatly decreases the speed. in the early hours I speed 300 Mbps WiFi. After 4-5 hours at 30-40 drops. or less.

Does it stay like that through the day until you reboot? Also, what device are you using?

until I restart yes. Cable no problems with speed. Nexus 6 Nexus player, nvidia shield Tv, honor 7 asus zenfone2, lg g flex 2, 3 laptop.

I have 2 Amazon FireTV boxes both run Android, just like your Nexus 6 player -- My FireTV boxes have issues on 5Ghz. This has been a on-going issue.  I wonder if there is a correlation.

EDIT -- Last month I put them both on Wifi Extenders, so I no longer have that issue.

hi, i have the 1900acs too and i have some problems with the kaloz image.
i installed the image and i got problems with tls in my vpn connection.
to restart from scratch i want to reinstall the image. now after the reinstall i can't connect to the router until 2-3 restarts.
after that i get the "old" image and settings. i try davids image to, but get the same results.

Try going through stock firmware, then to image you want.

thanks! this works. but now a new problem, for the 1. login i need a user/password. the wiki says that this is on the first "root/"blank". but "blank" didn't work. Invalid username and/or password! Please try again.
