I have patched support for the v11 into trunk but would need some testers since I do not have the hardware myself.

Images (both 15.05.1 and trunk) can be found here.

I had reports of the TP-Link web interface refusing the image so please try flashing to TFTP and report back to me. There might be a firmware lock in place in the TP-Link web interface.

If the site does not resolve, please try another DNS provider like OpenDNS or Google's DNS servers.

Everyone is of course welcome to test but you need to be able to fall back to TFTP if things go wrong.

Edit: since v11 support has been upstreamed, I am now only providing a 15.05.1 image. You can pull the trunk build from OpenWrt's official snapshots.

I'll try to test your images on monday, 28.03, but how v11 differ from v10, except flash chip? Few days ago I successfully flashed TL-WR841N v11 with v10 image (via sysupgrade -F /tmp/xxx-sysupgrade.bin). Regards

Thanks! From what I gathered there shouldn't be any more differences besides the model version embedded in the firmware header. It wouldn't be the first router where a manufacturer bumps the revision number over minor differences, 'breaking' the image check in OpenWrt.

In fact, what you did with -F is exactly that: skipping the image check. You're knowledgeable enough to be aware there shouldn't be any technical hurdles in using a v10 image on a v11, but the average user is not.

Forcing sysupgrade or modifying the headers are workarounds till proper support is implemented; these images were built from an OpenWrt tree with proper support . It will be upstreamed once I get confirmation it is indeed working.

Edit: It looks like the firmware works but I'd need confirmation that the image can be flashed from a TP-Link firmware.

Would you mind reverting back to the original firmware and then trying to install my build through TFTP?

Yes, I can confirm that both images are quite stable - 15.05.1 (without issues, except nonexistent source "http://volatilesystems.org/dl/openwrt/c … /packages/" in /etc/opkg/distfeeds.con) and trunk (some issues: default access to shell for "root" without any password is granted, some minor issues in luci - also noticed in other trunk images)
In case of installing factory image 15.05.1 via tp-link web interface it is important to rename image file (use shorter name, e.g. tl-wr841-v11-factory.bin) - no need to use TFTP.
Wi-fi signal level and coverage are good, comparable to original firmware, system and kernel logs - without an errors. Do you need any other information? Thanks

The opkg sources are leftovers from my own builds, you'll notice the 15.05.1 has the last LTS kernel as well. You should be able to replace the links with the regular OpenWrt ones.

I have sent in patches for inclusion in both trunk and Chaos Calmer 15.05.1.

Just wondering about the 1MB/8MB, which seem a bit low for OpenWrt...

I have seen that wikidevi entry as well, I think it's incorrect. People have reported the v11 to be almost identical to the v10, and that one is 4/32. Also, my images have been confirmed working, so...

I think someone messed up over there .

Completely new to OpenWRT so here are a couple of newbie questions.

I've just acquired a V11 this morning.

Tried to look for v11 image in the official trunk and it was not there.

Downloaded v10 thinking maybe it would work, while using the web interface. It throws me an error saying "Please choose a file to upgrade" even tho i choose the .bin file i downloaded.

Next step i attempted was trying to look for specific v11 image and came to this forum post, however the link provided by OP does not work anymore.

I would really appreciate any assistance.

The image *is* present in the OpenWrt snapshots, I just verified this again. You should look closer.

Used wiki link which led me to https://downloads.openwrt.org/chaos_cal … x/generic/ where v11 is not present.

So i just used the web interface and it gladly accepted the image v11, however, after rebooting 192.168.1.1 is not accessible, saying the site cannot be reached. I looked up some guides on the internet, tried changing my network address to 192.168.1.2 to no avail.

What am i missing?

Edit: Just reinstalled the openwrt imagine via TFTPD, still getting the same "The site cannot be reached".

Trunk images do not contain Luci. You need to install it manually.

Can i add Luci to the v11 image somehow and use the TP-Link web interface?

Edit: On a second thought, if i cant even deal with this, OpenWRT is probably not for me and i'll just use something tiny bit more noob friendly.

Was able to go back to original firmware without any troubles.

Well, for what it's worth, the stable 15.05.1 image I provide in the very first post of this topic does include LuCI . There's no reason to run trunk if you're new to OpenWrt.

I just got myself a TP-Link WR841N v11. I'm completely new to OpenWRT, so do I just :

2. Access the stock TP-Link firmware GUI.
3. Go to firmware update and use this .bin.

Am I right?

After successful upgrade, do I need to do a 30/30/30 reset like DD-WRT?

try to use opendns ( https://use.opendns.com/ ) as a temporary solution to allow you to access the webpage.

i have no issues with https://volatilesystems.org/dl/openwrt/ … r841n-v11/

for some reasons google dns fails to resolve it. (i use my isp dns, opendns and google dns.)

You are, but the GUI might complain about the image name, so rename it to something like tplink.bin if it does that. You not need, under any circumstances, that 30/30/30 reset.

Borromini, I was able to upload the 15.05.1 firmware from your site with only having to rename the file. It doesn't appear that LuCI is installed... I checked /etc/init.d and the uhttpd service is not there. Should I follow this guide to install it? - https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/luci.essentials

Borromini, I was able to upgrade to OpenWRT from TP-Link stock firmware using your .bin file. However it does not have LuCi installed like you said. This is the .bin file I download from your site :

It gave me this error :

I have rebuilt the images, they should be fine now (and include LuCI). Should also point to the OpenWrt repos now.
