I installed the latest trunk on the router and works ok. I tried to install a couple of packages on it and some of them failed due to the lack of memory.
Is there any way to increase the memory? If i read the specs right it should have 4 MB memory. Any help appreciated as im quite new to this topic.

There are two ways of getting more memory:
1. If you are really good with soldering iron, you can replace flash memory. Start point would be https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=187967
2. Use extroot with your external storage device: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/extroot

guys, i have compiled an own image for the router, howerver i don't have uart cable and won't be able to unbrick the router in case something goes wrong

can somebody assist me with the validation? i hope i need it only once big_smile

you are using device which is not supported by openwrt: wr720n v1 - european version (i can see 3 ethernet ports on first picture)

the topic is about wr720n v3 - chinese version

Hello. I flash openwrt via web interface (china default firmware)
But I made a mistake. I flashed the image "openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr720n-v3-squashfs-sysupgrade" . Although properly need to flash another image "openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr720n-v3-squashfs-factory" .
Router not brick. but i am no have access to web interface.
Now I can  connect to router via telnet (192.168.1.1 port 23).
Could you advise me now  to restore the router?

telnet to the router
wget url-to-sysupgrade -O /tmp/img
sysupgrade /tmp/img

How i fix my router tp-link wrn720n V3 Chinese Version:
1.I use custom openwrt firmware "Madox USBIP 36503_2013-05-01 / LuCI Trunk (svn-r9812)"

Copy firmware (file:///home/user/openwrt_TLWR720_usbip_2013-05-01_squash-factory.bin
) to my home folder "user"

2.(open terminal and write this)
telnet 192.168.1.1

3.(if connect to router  ok, set new password)
passwd

4.(open other terminal window and write this.Input my password)

scp openwrt_TLWR720_usbip_2013-05-01_squash-factory.bin root@192.168.1.1:/tmp

5.(open first terminal window with telnet and write this)

sysupgrade -v /tmp/openwrt_TLWR720_usbip_2013-05-01_squash-factory.bin

6.all done, after router reboot you can go to 192.168.1.1 and login to openwrt web interface

somebody has a firmware with exroot? Some reason, I do not have enough memory on the router to install the necessary software from the repository.

here are the same device but with 8mb flash and 64mb ram , http://www.gl-inet.com/w/?page_id=308&lang=en bought from ebay for 25$ including shipping

Interesting.  Are you sure they can use the same firmware, even if they have the same hardware.

The GL-iNet comes with BARRIER BREAKER (Bleeding Edge, r38451).  I haven't tried sysupgrade.  In particular, I don't know what that would do about the wan port.

Do you mean it is installed with the BARRIER BREAKER already?  So BARRIER BREAKER is its native firmware or it need to upgraded to it?  BTW is it comes with the 720's BARRIER BREAKER version or specifically for GL-iNet?

This is an interesting device indeed.

BARRIER BREAKER is the native firmware (Bleeding Edge, r38451 in my case, prior to the ar71xx usb/serial fix).  I assume this version is specifically for GL-iNet, but don't know for certain--except that the 720 has only 4mb flash and this has 8, most of it used.

I'm looking into buying one of these (wr-720n Chinese version).  But this might be a dumb question, but will the flip out plugs work in U.S. Sockets? Or am I stuck to the USB power, I've tried asking the sellers on aliexpress, but their answers are a little unclear.
Thanks!

gl.inet fw can be builded from 720v3 target, just change rom to 8mb ( trunk/target/linux/ar71xx/image/Makefile
$(eval $(call SingleProfile,TPLINK-LZMA,64kraw,TLWR720NV3,tl-wr720n-v3,TL-WR720N-v3,ttyATH0,115200,0×07200103,1,8Mlzma ), i flashed my, working fine :-)

twinclouds, yes, it coming with OpenWrt Barrier Breaker r38451 / LuCI Trunk (svn-r9948) out of box
http://imageshack.com/a/img28/82/7v2n.jpg
have two UI, one can be accesed by default on http://192.168.8.1. looks like this
http://imageshack.com/a/img594/4726/31ln.png
and another standard openwrt interface on http://192.168.8.1/cgi-bin/luci
personal cloud, usb camera can be conected and used like baby monitor..or etc.., download client (torrent magnet, links)..all this can be controlled by android app or iphone app..and all this are already included for free:-)

Thanks.  I have a reverse question.  I have a 720N upgraded to 8M, can I simply install this firmware on it?  Will there be any advantages over the trunk version?

twinclouds, can you send to me your openwrt fw for wr720n 8mb, i will try to flash my gl.inet router with your fw:-)

I haven't tried it for sometime so I need to dug it out.

Twin clouds, are you living in the US? And if so, do the flip-out plugs of your wr720n work? Or do you just use the usb adapter

Yes, the plug works in US.

Does anybody know if the trunk version of 720n v3 supports the mode switch?

Just heard from the tp-link whole seller in Shenzhen that tp-link has stopped the production of v3, and put v4 in mass production. So it's not easy to purchase v3 on the market. Is it possible to have v4 in the snapshot in trunk?

@loyukfai I captured these 2 images from the link you provided:

Someone friendly gave me these builds to try out (built on/around 14-Aug), trialed okay on a test device:
