Topic: dead after flashing wr703n

The content of this topic has been archived between 14 Feb 2014 and 3 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

Because I found link to squashfs-factory.bin as stated at http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr703n.

I bought wr703N from ebay last week with preinstalled dd-wrt.
I needed  additional usbnet and cdc-ether.

So I decided to flash software from http://www.madox.net/blog/ and I did it. I have been connected with telnet, everything has been working fine (lucy web, opkg) exept usbnet.

I can not install required package from  madox's package directory.
(Because my 703n did not has Internet connection at that time, I copied whole package directory to my PC local web server and  changed path in configuration file via lucy interface. opkg did not find usbnet instalation option.
Also I tried to install usbnet package copied with whole directory from http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09-beta/ar71xx/generic/packages/ to PC's web server. Then I got some errors during usbnet installation process)

Then I succesfuly installed squashfs-sysupgrade.bin  as I found at wiki http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr703n.
I have been working with telnet and putty but did not find working web interface. so I decided to flash a squashfs-factory.bin....

Now I am looking a clear way how to to debrick wr703N with usb-serial. Do you know a good tutorial?

My model is v1.6 as I found on external stick. It is written inside 12C262 on ethernet stick.

Yes, I tried to go to failsafe mode.
I changed PC's eth IP to static 192.168.1.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 and connected to 703n via ethernet.
Then I launched recvudp.exe on PC
I played with reset button on startup, led has been flashing rapidly.  No response on recuvdp window.
No ping to 192.168.1.1

Can You confirm that hex on http://forums.openpilot.org/blog/52/entry-92-unbrick-wr703n-wifi-router/ is correct for 703n?
Can I flash *factory.bin from madox.net instead of suggested openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin?

Hello community,

it seems, that I received yesterday a new hardware version of the TL-WR703N.

On the external sticker on case bottom:
MAC: 14 cf 92 xx xx xx
S/N: 13137013xxx
Ver: 1.6

in web-interface after applying google-translate:
Aktuelle Software-Version:
3.14.4 Build-121204 Rel.41020n
Aktuelle Hardware-Versionen:
WR703N v1 00000000

In Web-Interface:
当前软件版本:
3.14.4 Build 121204 Rel.41020n
当前硬件版本:
WR703N v1 00000000

on the internal sticker located on the Ethernet jack:
TL-WR703N 1.6
131370

two images inside:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxiT_3NnYdcPLXQzV19QcWtHWWc/edit?usp=sharing
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxiT_3NnYdcPS2NlblFHMWpSUFU/edit?usp=sharing

So, what hardware revision is it?
3.14.4 ist the same version as on v1.7
121204 and 41020n ist newer than v1.7
two times 1.6 are irrelevant

And last, but not least: Is there an working image of OpenWRT?
Has anyone got it running?

regards

I am no expert.  Mines are real V1.5

Bur if you go to the first page they use this commands

grep -a U-Boot /dev/mtd0ro | cut -d'I' -f1

my v1.5 reads

U-Boot 1.1.4 (Sep 26 2011 - 11:13:49

and they expressed that v1.7 were reading

U-Boot 1.1.4 (Feb 28 2012 - 11:58:29)

see the diference in date

What are yours?

it's hard do use that command with stock firmware..

If my guess that the Build number is actually a date, this U-Boot is from December 4th, 2012, while the "1.7" (Build 120925) was from September 25th, 2012, and this means that this is an even newer firmware than 1.7 ("1.8"?), and we are maybe facing new unexpected problems...

May I get the Uboot-Output with stock Firmware on serial output?
At the Moment I have a USB-Serial Adapter, but no free connector to solder.

Regards

it's possible, but not obvious, that uboot is different only because fw build date is different...
Anyway imho the "1.7 eth problem" will be the first and only problem wink

Just to let you know I got a router with the same build number as yours.  I jumped in with both feet and installed v1.7 that I got here :

https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=42100

Works great, and I now finally managed to get usb tethering from a smartphone working!  Never managed to install udev package due to lack of space, but it seems to work anyway.

Hello, with the great remote support ob nebbia88,

we examined and flashed my wr703n successfully.

We used the testing-firmware from post 77 and this works well for my purposes.

Thanks a lot to nebbia88.

I am deeply puzzled by Wiki and posts in this topic sad
I have  3.14.4 Build 120925 Rel.33144n

I dont have access to necessary hardware so I dont want to brick my router.According to this topic I have v1.7. I am not sure which image i should install.

a) http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … actory.bin
b) http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_a … actory.bin
c) nebbia88's image from dropbox

Which one gives me better build? I just need stable build that I can try MiniPwner. I will appreciate if you help me on this issue. Thanks.

I'm very unlucky, i made a sysupgrade and the last build doesn't have the kmod-usb package support, maybe for an error in the compilation. I need these packages because i have to set up the router with a E180 usb 3g dongle. What should i do?

This is the way I upgraded my WR703N 1.7:

- Install the standard pre-built image through the original Chinese web interface (http://www.madox.net/blog/projects/tp-link-tl-wr703n/)
- Upgrade to the latest trunk: openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

Everything working but the 3G (still not supported).

For 3G do you mean the 3g usb dongle support?

Yes toketin (I opened the other thread asking about it smile )

Does anyone know if the latest trunk from Apr 9th works with 1.7 firmware?  Does it have the patch from r35037?

I upgraded yesterday to the latest firmware in a 1.7 without problems.

Nevermind, I got it.  I flashed successfully with last nights trunk snapshot.  No issues with boot up or mounting usb drive.

So you used this image?  http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … actory.bin

No, to upgrade it you must install the sysupgrade version. Factory must be used to install openwrt from the original software.

tested AArc2 on my 703 v1.6, no problems so far wink

What about AArc2 and 703 v1.7? As I understand it should work since it is based on r36088?

Encoraged by last posts I tried to sysupgrade mine again and again got bricked. I've managed to revive it through serial port though. i've flashed the rom linked as sysupgrade at the main page of the wiki. Is that the one you are installing? If not, could you post the correct link please? I'm a little lost with the nomenclature (trunk, snapshot,...etc).
