Having major wifi issues. i want to be able to use VHT160 if possible and cant use a channel higher than 48 for DFS reason. if possible i want to setup for fastest possible 5ghz wifi speed using both radios for a single ssid

Is it just me? I flashed the image, it had Luci, but no WIFI tab for configuration? I was expecting to have to install Luci, but didn't have to, but can someone advise about WIFI?

I Tried the R7000 image, didn't want to mess with my R8000 yet. Maybe WIFI is in the R8000 image and not the R7000?

Hi. I'm quite new to the OpenWRT scene... I have an R8000 and was wondering the status of the latest Chaos Calmer release?

From the comments on here it appears that the radio side isn't stable?

I previously installed a Kong build of dd-wrt and after lots of tweaking I still couldn't get anywhere near the Wifi performance of the stock firmware, so reverted back to stock.

So I installed on my R8000. Mostly ok apart from both 5Ghz radios, which even though are enabled, say "Wireless is disabled or not associated"

I'm in the UK and have the country code set correctly for all radios.

Can anybody guide me in the right direction how to get them working, or give me a set of working settings for the UK that I can tweak myself if the channels clash?

I managed to get one of the 5GHz radios to come up, but only if I selected a width of 40GHz. Not great as I'd really like to get it working at 80 or 160. I guess this might be the same issue as reported by olliesmit above?


If I can't get 5GHz working then I'm sadly going to have to abandon openwrt.

160 Mhz is not possible with the R8000, not with stock firmware, not with OpenWrt.

80Mhz on the other hand should be working fine. There is one requirement which we unfortunately can not detect in our driver regarding the 5Ghz, and that is that the first radio is for the higher bands (148 or something else, depending on country) and the second 5Ghz device (radio2) should be used for the lower bands (48, or something like that and lower). However this requirement does not have impact on functionality. If you use the wrong channel it should still work (with 80 Mhz bands) and only impact performance.

As soon as I have access to an R8000 I will give it a try with country code UK and see what happens. You could try US, I've tried that country code in the past locally and it works fine for me. Don't forget to reboot your AP after changing the country code.

If you get them up and running the wireless should perform fine. I've gotten speeds of at least 600Mbit/s (on short range) for long periods of time.

The problem is not the channel list. Those are fine. The problem is with external hardware (PA) which limits the quality of the signal to certain bands. It is not unusable on the other bands, just doesn't work as good. It is a limitation made by Netgear which got reflected in their GUI.

I was set up as you suggested - First device on a high band second on a low band, and the only way I could get anything to work at all was to set the second device to 40Ghz, and it would come up and work. At this point, whatever I selected for the first radio gave me the error ""Wireless is disabled or not associated". I tried just about every combination I could.

I'm moving on from OpenWRT - Have sold the R8000 on eBay, and will replace it with something Asus running Merlin I think.

Spent some time today on this issue and there is indeed a problem with brcmfmac/firmware running on OpenWrt when it comes to setting country codes. Unfortunately there is no easy workaround. Some details first: The country code being set by userspace needs a translation to a country which can be used by the firmware. This should have been done by the driver, but it isn't. The biggest problem for us (driver developers) is that the translation is board/platform specific. So the R8000 needs its own mapping which we can not determine runtime.

The only workaround for the moment is selecting the country US, but that should not be done when being in an other country.

There is also another "quick" workaround, but that will need a patch on brcmfmac and hence a new build. The country code configured by Netgear user interface gets set in NVRAM. This country code is "correct" and should not be overwritten by the driver. So by commenting out the code which which actually programs the "country" in the driver would work around the problem, but wont allow you to select a different country/region from the user interface, but once configured correctly through the netgear firmware this should not be necessary unless you physically move the AP to a different country/region.

We have had a short internal discussion on how to solve this in the future and have some ideas, but all solutions require quite a bit of work and we want to do this properly, so there wont be any good solution in the next coming days. Our main idea currently focuses on having platform data (of some sorts) which maps the country codes of cfg80211 to firmware country codes, but that requires a mapping for each platform/device. On the other hand we don't see any good alternative.  Some mapping is needed at some point to get this working.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and problems this has resulted in.

No problem, thanks for investigating for us. Was hoping to use my R8000 with Sky Fibre in the UK, which requires DHCP Option 61 support, and the stock firmware doesn't support it, and OpenWrt does.

I picked up a cheap RT-AC87U on eBay. Hoping I have more luck with Merlin, although that seems to have its own issues from what I'm now reading!

Hello all,

I recently purchased the R8000 here in the U.S. and have been subscribed to this thread via rss ever since so that I could see all the progress being made.
what appears to be the official page (http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/netg … gear_r8000) still has no real information on it other than this thread, but I have seen a post or two here recently saying that the current build mentioned is basically working.
I'm not totally new to to flashing firmware on routers as I have been using ddwrt and tomato for years now, but I like to be careful when flashing to make sure I don't brick my device (especially one as expensive as this).
Because I have been running ddwrt and tomato for so long, im having trouble being ok with the stock firmware on the device, so i'm really looking forward to putting something else on it, and from my research, OpenWRT seems like something I would be happy to have running on my device.

If it sounds like there is a build appropriate for someone like me, could someone point me in the appropriate direction to get it installed?

I downloaded the CC image from the buildbot link in one of the previous posts, uploaded it through the stock firmware update page, and when I rebooted got nada. Hooked up serial console and that's when I saw the output above. Any thoughts on what the heck is wrong? Did I blow something up? I can reflash stock firmware using CFE/Tftpd recovery and it works fine, but no joy at all with OpenWRT...

The driver does currently not support beamforming. The 43602 (R8000 uses these chips for its wireless) is capable of doing beamforming and the firmware has the support for it built in, but it needs to be enabled by the driver. We will update the driver so in the future beamforming will be enabled when supported by firmware and hardware.

Yes the R8000 is (fully) supported and yes there is an issue with country code. Only country code US will currently result in a working 5Ghz wlan.

My Archer C7 V2, has very weak 5Ghz signal
My MR3420 V2, works best, but is too slow...

Which device with 5Ghz and Gbit LAN works great?

I downloaded the CC image from the buildbot link in one of the previous posts, uploaded it through the stock firmware update page, and when I rebooted got nada. Hooked up serial console and that's when I saw the output above. Any thoughts on what the heck is wrong? Did I blow something up? I can reflash stock firmware using CFE/Tftpd recovery and it works fine, but no joy at all with OpenWRT...

I've tried the buildbot twice and had to recover. I guess the best bet is the build on this link:

I downloaded the CC image from the buildbot link in one of the previous posts, uploaded it through the stock firmware update page, and when I rebooted got nada. Hooked up serial console and that's when I saw the output above. Any thoughts on what the heck is wrong? Did I blow something up? I can reflash stock firmware using CFE/Tftpd recovery and it works fine, but no joy at all with OpenWRT...

I've tried the buildbot twice and had to recover my router both times I guess the best bet is the build on this link:

It works like a charm on my R8000.

The buildbot image works well on my r7000(no WiFi), and my AC56U( only 2.4ghz radio). But the image for the r8000 bricks.
