Today on cnx-software there was a post of external HDD with wifi:

There is no brand or specs about the device, but when You check te pictures on the aliexpress site:

You will think it is the Luci interfaces rebranded to KIMAX.  I'm almost sure this thing runs openwrt.

Hello, I bought this device and indeed it runs openwrt.  Ssh was not installed, so I installed it through the Luci webinterface.
Problem: I couldn't login because I only had the username kimax and the password for this user, not the root password.

Then I took the risk to flash it with another openwrt-firmware, more specific, the one of the wrtnode as it was the same chipset ramips 7020N) and I was sure the wifi on the wrtnode works.  So this device booted and I could connect through wifi and point my browser to the Luci webinterface.  I expected it shouldn't work and I had to telnet first to set a password for root.  But instead I got the luci webinterface.  I tried with the username kimax and password to login and it worked...but I just had a white webpage without data.

So now I can't login as root and can't login as user kimax.  I found out ssh is enabled but without root password I can't login.  Failsafe mode seems to be disabled.
Is there a way to get the root password?  As I can ssh to the device I could configure it through ssh, but then I need the root password.
I already tried to attack ssh with hydra, but I'm not sure it really attacks as it doesn't even give an error message when I disconnect the connection.

I don't see a serial connection, but the device is made of a moherboard and daughterboard with the soc.  There is probably a serial connection somewhere on the pins, but I have no idea how to find it.

This seems to be a interesting device.  Missing the root password without failsave is indeed tricky.
I will subscribe to this topic since I will buy this device if its possable to run a openwrt install without modifications from the manufacturer.

Please confirm the chipset, ram, flash, etc.  I do not see a rampis 7020N.  Do you mean 7620?

I have requested a new brand to be added for this.  Check for Kimax or Blueendless.

There are 2 versions of the BS-U25WF:
- with a ralink rt5350F and one anteena, see this russian blog: http://qpcb.buhost.ru/?page_id=87 there is a picture of rx and tx
- with a mt7620n soc, this ona has 2 antennas (that is the one I have)

Both are with a baseboard and a pluggable mainboard with the soc.

I found the tx and rx also on mine.  So I had chance to unbrick it. and it runs openwrt just fine, altough the ethernet port doesn't work, altough when booting The lights of the ethernet port flashes and you get a failsafe message through it.  Once it is booted it doesn't do anything anymore.  Will probably a configuration issue.

I don't get it working as wireless repeater also, it works as AP and as Client, but not both on the same time.  Probably also something in the configuration.

I didin't have time to look into it further.  From the moment I find out how you can add pictures to this forum, I will upload some pictures of the serial location.

Further I can tell you these specs:
- soc: mt7620n
- Wireless: rt5390
- ram: 64Mb
- Flash: 16Mb
- 2 antennas

Try this OpenWRT (Chaos Calmer) firmware with LUCI. I made it with my patch.
All works. Connect Kimax via Ethernet cable. IP 192.168.0.1

I always like to build my own firmware using the imagebuilder. So I can include all the packages I need which will then be compressed inside the image. Do you have plans to include this patch in the trunk repository?

I want but i don't know how to do it. If you know how, you can do it or explain me how to do.

What is the difference is between the BS-U25WF (with MT7620) and the  U25AWF?
Which, if either have the working USB 3.0?

My device using USB 3.0 only for HDD Enclosure mode, when it used like NAS, USB 3.0 does not use.

The usb 3.0 of the BS-U25WF is also only for the HD enclosure, not in connection with the SOC.

On the manual there was mentioned this was an upgraded version (I will search the manual and post a picture).  So it is possible these are all mt7620 versions now.

On the U25AWF I only seen a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 (and Ethernet).  I do not see a micro charging connection.  Does one charge from the USB 2.0?  How do you connect a USB flash drive?  Is that a heat sink for the HDD?  Not keen on a white case.  How is it holding up?

On the BS-U25WF it appears to have all 3 USB (Charge, 2.0 and 3.0).  Does the USB 3.0 work for the HDD as Kh_Shad indicates?

Battery - All the adds say 4000Mah on top, but 3000 in the spec.  What is the real value, and have you looked to see if there are "spares" available.  Looks like it can easily be field changed for longer run time.

My battery is 4000mAh and upgradeable if you want, but I don't think a bigger one will fit the enclosure.

The porblem with the bs-u25wf is that the router part doesn't work when charging the battery.  In the manual they say it does with a charger of minimum 2A.  But I tried it and it doesn't work.  It's also possible the charger is not really 2A of course....

My version work with 2A charger, i checked it.

I do not understand what you mean by OTG/Charge.

It sounds like neither of these will charge from a laptop USB (900mah supposedly), though I so not really know what the USB puts out.  See USB 3.0 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#USB_3.0 .

I was not looking for a bigger battery, just a second battery.
