I see, we had a misunderstanding here: You were talking about the namespaces in the media manager, while I was talking about namespaces in :toh:
Topic: Improve the Wiki Table of Hardware?
The content of this topic has been archived between 12 Sep 2015 and 6 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.
tmo26 wrote:And if there's a start page missing: Do we really need to teach our users how to create one?
I mean: Look at the start page of e.g. d-link.YES, YES, YES. I looked at this and it was not intuitive to add a brand/start page/hierarchy element.
Is already explained: "Upload a file to the current namespace here. To create subnamespaces, prepend them to your filename separated by colons after you selected the files. Files can also be selected by drag and drop."
I see this in the media manager when I try to upload a file.
Currently active in the wiki:
toh:alice:iad.7570 toh:avm:fritz.box.wlan.7570 toh:alice:iad4421 toh:arcadyan:arv7506 toh:netgear:wndr37av toh:netgear:wndr3700 toh:tp-link:tl-mr3220 toh:tp-link:tl-mr3420 toh:linksys:wrt54g-tm toh:linksys:wrt54g toh:asus:wl-330n3g toh:asus:wl-330n toh:hotsion:hot-v9 toh:poray:prp-x5
Can / should we make more use of this?
My impression is that this should be used tactical and short term to restructure and clean things up.
In the long term all the "old" links should be fixed and the redirect removed.
In MediaWiki there are pages/reports for "what links here" and "orphaned pages". I guess DokuWiki has something similar.
richbhanover wrote:tmo26 wrote:Rather than creating a new page with a new name, I can simply rename that page.
Yes, but I think the underlying dataentry pages would need to be updated, and wouldn't external references to the old page be a broken link?
Not that I absolutely want to implement it this way, however, I'd like to mention the possibility of redirects.
Example redirects currently active in the wiki:
toh:alice:iad.7570 toh:avm:fritz.box.wlan.7570 toh:alice:iad4421 toh:arcadyan:arv7506 toh:netgear:wndr37av toh:netgear:wndr3700 toh:tp-link:tl-mr3220 toh:tp-link:tl-mr3420 toh:linksys:wrt54g-tm toh:linksys:wrt54g toh:asus:wl-330n3g toh:asus:wl-330n toh:hotsion:hot-v9 toh:poray:prp-x5
Can / should we make more use of this?
Possibly, but I think this is overkill for my situation, which is a one-off repair of a badly-chosen filename.
I can just rename/edit those few files and be done with it. That avoids the cognitive overload of trying to figure out how URL A got (magically) redirected to URL B.
Update: Perhaps we could use a redirect for my point 4) - to redirect the old (deprecated) URL to the new page. That would be a tidy solution, but does this require administrator intervention?

Second and subsequent times: I can still upload, but can't edit any of the metadata... Ideas?Which media namespace, which file?
Edit:
Ah, OK, I see.
However: No clue.
And even more confusing to newcomers/people who want to help us do the right thing...
In the Media Manager, I was able to upload to the top level :media section, but not to the top level :toh section. To replicate, I logged in, then:
- Click Media Manager button
- Click media (immediately to the right of the "+/-"
- Click Upload tab
- Works fine
- Click toh (again, to the right of the "+/-")
- Click Upload tab
- I see the message, "Sorry, you don't have enough rights to upload files."
Any ideas?

I get the same rights problem in ToH. I was trying to load to TOH, which is why I never saw the message about "subnamespace". Never got that far.
There is content in both. Independent of the rights issue, which one is preferred? As you can see, my confusion began in post 1044 where I suggested clarifying the path to media:toh:[brand]:
I can upload to without problems to
- media
- media:toh
- toh
There's no possibility to edit the metadata of the uploaded picture, in neither of the namespaces above.
@richb: Where did you get the message "not enough rights"? In toh or media:toh?
Edit: OK, I see, normal users can not upload to toh namespace. Perfect, we want media to be uploaded to the media:toh namespace anyways. This answers also Rangerz's question.

Proposal for clarifying where to upload pictures:
OLD: Picture_img100s : media:doc:genericrouter1.png # media:toh:brand:brand_model_general_view.jpg;
NEW: Picture_img100s : media:toh:examplebrand:examplebrand_examplemodel_exampleversion_general_view.jpg # Upload to http://wiki.openwrt.org/start?do=media&ns=media:toh
Please try the link and feedback, if this link in conjunction with the examplebrand etc. makes now clear where to upload.

Solution: Editing metadata is only possible for jpgs, not for pngs.
see https://www.dokuwiki.org/media_manager#layout
I think it is clear enough. My idea was to try to upload an image of a router I actually own, but I failed to take a photograph (of a shiny router, at night time) that I was happy enough with. So I have not tested.
What does 100s means? I thought the idea was that the pictures are 100x100 pixels... but that does not seem to be the case.

Hmm... yes, that's exactly what the 100s means.
From https://www.dokuwiki.org/plugin:data#data_entry_input:
img<num> the input is assumed to be a image URL or local media id. The optional <num> is the wanted width in pixels to resize the image to (defaults to 40)
What makes you think that this is not it's function?

The text under "Conventions per characteristic"
1) Get picture from OEM website
(min 640x480; max 1280x720, max 1MB)
2) Store it in the OpenWrt wiki via the media-manager: media:toh:brand:brand_model_general_view.jpg
3) Get link to picture: Find picture in media manager, click on it, scroll down, copy the link
4) Add link to the dataentry. Do not link to OEM website, because that link may change.
And the fact that the images already here
http://wiki.openwrt.org/start?do=media&ns=media:toh
had all possible dimensions.
Do we expect people to crop the picture to 100x100 locally, and upload the 100x100 picture?
Or does the media-manager do the cropping in the web browser?
(I will find a vendor picture of my router and upload it to try)
Update: I uploaded a picture of TP-Link Archer C20i. I remembered to make it square, but I forgot to make it 100x100.
Apart from that, I think it was fine. I dont know if it is a problem that it is now 400x400 instead.

re: Editing metadata - yes, it only applies to jpeg's. (That's why it worked the first time - I had a jpeg, but my second version, with an alpha mask to make the white background transparent, was a PNG.)
re: permissions on :media:toh. Yes, that works fine. I edited the template_device entry to point to the generic router image in :media:toh:example:GenericRouter1.png
re: 100px images. That seems too small. The template_device now recommends 200 px, but we can adjust it.

Hehehe, you were sneeking in the wikisource, which a normal user is not supposed to do.
Remember: When you edit the dataentry via the LEFT edit button (scnr), you don't even see the img100.

Why would you want to make it 100x100, while the instructions tell you "(min 640x480; max 1280x720, max 1MB)"?-)
Take a look at my favourite toy: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/d-li … nk_dir-505
I added a second picture and changed the size to 200. Play around, set other sizes as you like. Click on the pictures and see their real size.
All that img100 does: Whatever the size of the picture is, resize it to 100px on the large side. It is just a display option, that does not change the picture used.
I updated the proposed topnote (thanks for your contributions RangerZ) to put back a warning about not being final. It's at: http://wiki.openwrt.org/playground/toh/top_note
Can we agree that this could become the current topnote while we're waiting for jow to upload the final set of dataentry page?
re: 100px images. That seems too small. The template_device now recommends 200 px, but we can adjust it.
We are flexible here, size can be changed as we like.
Would it make sense to encourage/remind @jow of the little service we need from him, for the last time?

Yes.
What do we want the topnote of the ToH to say, either now or after @jow pulls the trigger?
re: :media:toh:example:genericrouter1.png...
I want to document here that I licensed that this file from http://Dreamstime.com. It is ID 14765982 © Igor Nazarenko. I contribute it to the OpenWrt project. (This information is also in the EXIM info of the PNG, but that isn't visible in the Media Manager...)
Anyone want any other images? This one cost me a whole 5 cents (US) - special introductory deal. I think I can get a few more as part of this one-time promotion.
Note to self: Cancel my subscription to Dreamstime.com, so they don't charge me $39 next month (!)
I am not clear if this content is planned for the http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start or for all pages. I see no issue in adding it to all as the real estate is substantially the vertical height of the table of variations.
The only change I think that is needed, assuming the hard hat goes away, is the line in Bold "ToH Topnote"
I think this can just be "Table of Hardware (ToH)" for the http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start page. If used on other pages I think this should have the variation name added to the end => "Table of Hardware (ToH) - Extended, Supported"
I think it looks better to spell out "Table of Hardware (ToH)" on all page titles with the accepted abbreviation in parens.

@RangerZ:
- Yes the hardhat has gone away now.
- Yes, I envision that this can appear at the top of all ToH pages.
- The "ToH Topnote" goes away when embedded/included in a page. See, for example, http://wiki.openwrt.org/playground/reb/toh
- I believe that each of the ToH variations has its own heading that describes what you'll see.

jow did the update, the new toh is live now.

Great! I guess you did some basic validation before you updated the RC Topic.
I will have a look at the ToH and if I see anything strange I will get back. But I dont expect anything.
Just 5 months ago I started this Topic... we have been quite productive, I think.
I'm very pleased with the result. You guys did a very good job on this!
The other day I uploaded and configured the picture:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/tp-l … 0iac750_v1
The picture link still works, after the update. How is that?
