This is better. I like where you are going!

Are there more variations thinkable for certain users?
If we need more variations, the layout would need to be changed *again*.
Thinking about this a bit more: Who are our customers? What do our customers want to know (=which columns are needed for each customer)?
Exactly the right questions.

Yes.
#1 is near and dear to my heart. I hunger to make easy for someone to hear about OpenWrt, come to www.openwrt.org, then get to the ToH, and say, "Hey, that's my router, and it's listed in the supported by the stable release. Oh, and look, there are installation instructions on the Detail Page."
#2 - same, except they say, "I am looking for a router with 4 MBytes of Flash, three antennas, two USB ports, and a partridge in a pear tree :-) It's supported by the latest Trunk, and there are installation instructions on the Detail Page."
#4 - Might be the same as #1: Plug-and-play person who is looking to purchase a new router, and wants something simple, well supported, stable software.
I have the sense that each ToH variation needs its own topnote that lists:
- Headline of what it's about: "Supported with current stable build", "Supported by current RCx", "Full Hardware Details", etc.
- A 1-3 line summary of what you'll find on the page. "This page lists all the routers that are supported by the current stable Barrier Breaker 14.07 release", "This page lists all the routers that claim support by the Chaos Calmer 15.05 release", "This page lists the major hardware details for all routers supported by OpenWrt", etc.
- Instead of emphasizing the selection criteria ("Available, 15.05, 8MB/64MB"), the summary should give a sense of why devices are collected on the page.
- It certainly would be OK to display the selection criteria (e.g. Filtered by supported current rel*~15.05)
- A "call to action" (that is, "please help us by contributing to the wiki pages...")
- A separate set of 4-6 links to other interesting ToH's (perhaps consistent for all topnotes). Could be on the right half of the page.
- Using the ToH (similar to what's there now)
I don't think we need the full ToH-Variation table on every page, but it certainly should appear on its own page "All Table of Hardware Variations" somewhere - maybe in the right links to other ToH's section on the right.
I'm going to create two variations, and update this note when they're ready for view.
Oh, and #3? - Screw 'em. They're just a bunch of anal compulsive weenies who obsess about data representations. Let 'em make their own ToH :-)
